Buses and help on electricity bills are a good start.

Bus fares I agree with. It will help people on low incomes especially those travelling to work and is not that costly.

I'm not sure about VAT on leccy bills. Surprisingly on the BBS some are pointing out that this will cost the taxpayer a lot but will have minimum impact on the poor as it applies to all. The savings are a few quid which if you can afford it you wont notice and if you are poor is not enough. They may have a point it may not be sufficiently targeted to justify.

Poking my 'Vole snout' into the debate, the £2 bus fare was in the Conservative manifesto !
Apropos the £2 fare in Manchester, this was funded by over £1.1 billion from the last Conservative government.
This is a rare foray for me into the 'Political' debates, I shall now concentrate my efforts contributing to the football discussions. 👍

People were not on the streets. They coped. And they would have coped longer had the properties not been rushed, not blended in to local character, not ghost towns with no amenities, not p1ss-sodden high rises with concrete cancer etc...

They would have waited.

I come from a council flat on an estate. Maybe it wasn't great but we were poor and happy enough.

It is very difficult and expensive to do targeted actions, especially for people earning but on low incomes.

Whilst not ideal and clearly it will benefit the highest earners too, i think the logic is to give out a few small savings to show the govt is doing something and is listening.

Also, people who are considered 'poor' (i'm guessing these include non earners, low earners or pensioners without any private pensions etc) are often spending the bulk of their money on bills e.g. utilities, food etc.
Some of the above may be on meters and/or not using the internet to get decent utility deals so the % they pay of their overall income (or benefits) can be quite high.

I think fuel poverty is defined as 10% or more being spend on your utilities. So if you are on state pension of c £1k per month you could easily be spending £150 to £200 a month on utilities. Therefore, removing the 5% will have some impact.

For most people it will be almost irrelevant

Yup as I said I am undecided if this is an efficient use of taxpayers money. I read somewhere it will cost 1bn in lost revenue don't know if that is true but it's a lot of money. The bus fare cap will cost around £250m which I think is value for money.

The vast majority of bus users in my area get it free anyway. £45 a year saving but price cap is rising, so what saving?
I agree that selling off Council housing was a big mistake, especially as Councils were meant to build alternatives with the money. Where are all these houses to be built? Goodbye Green and Pleasant, especially in the South.
We have a large development under construction in my area which will consist of 2800 houses on land that was a habitat for much wildlife. There is now an application to build another 120 houses on land opposite which is designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty!
