Two shops side by side same square footage pay the same rates. However one is a fast food junk shop whose customers leave litter all over the high street. The other is a local community based shops that the public consider an asset.
So why not up the rates for the obesity littering shop and reduce those for the shop that makes a contribution to the community.
For the record I would raise taxes on fast food, book makers, vape shops and any other anti social business.

Nobody is willing to pay more taxes for the level of government services provided. The prevailing opinion is it just gets wasted on either dossers or immigrants, or government red tape and overspends.
Services are getting worse and worse yet are costing more.
Higher taxes will soon be the death knell of Burnham's government and the calls for an election will reach a deafening crescendo.

He will drop the higher rate tax. Like to 45k as if that’s a huge wage nowadays. It isn’t in most banking or engineering jobs. The self employed will have cute accountants who will get round it.

I don't begrudge her earning this although I wonder that like all MPs who have second jobs just how well she was doing her job as a bank* bench MP.Call me cynical but is this not somewhat hypocritical, given her previous comments?

Not the electoral puff, but what the next government will deliver?
Unless there is a significant upturn in the economy (factors almost entirely out of any government's control) the successor will inherit the same debt, fiscal squeeze and tough choices.
If they come in on a platform of reduced taxes, that will impact directly on public services.
After they have sacked police commissioners, stopped unpopular "woke" stuff, and a whole draft of other populist savings that got them voted in, that will not even come close to covering the increased pension, health and care costs of our irreversibly ageing population.
They are the real costs that must be cut to pay for the tax reduction but will not be as the recipients of that largesse are the ones who did the voting in. Thus...
