Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

Not sure i agree. With £85m spent and potentially wasted in January having him for another year and losing say £20m (as some papers are suggesting) may not be a bad solution.

If his goals gets us another 4 places higher in the league that's c£12m, if he wins us a few European games that's extra money and his wages are reasonably low so that saves us a few £million too (JSL is supposedly on £120k a week that's £3.5m p.a more than JP).

If we went into next season with JSL, Eddie N and maybe a young, versatile forward (who would probably cost c£20m) i would be concerned.
I, too, am hoping Mateta stays even if he doesn't extend his contract before the season starts. If he performs well before Christmas and we are comfortably placed in the PL and the Europa League, we might be able to offload him in January for a reasonable fee OR he may have a change of heart and agree to extend his stay. By January we should have a better idea as well about JSL and Johnson.

In January Mateta could sign a pre-contract with an overseas club and leave on a 'Free' at the end of the season.

Don’t completely disagree with this , it’s very much an option to what I suggest. But we are talking about a player that unless he has reconsidered doesn’t want to be here. The club have accepted that and were happy to sell him in January. He has still not signed so its hard see what’s changed if offers come , if no offers come then of course he stays anyway.
Probably not very well but the real point I was getting at was that outside of massive offers ,and players wanting a move, Mateta, is the only one we know would go tomorrow regardless of fee. It doesnt often work keeping an unhappy player. Palace dont have to sell anyone but he would seem the most likely if they did.
It should be said Nketia, was rumoured to leave in january also, injury putting a spanner in that one. Its going to be interesting to see if both remain at the club.

I don't know if you were familiar with Oscar before (I wasn't), but when I read about him being able to play any defensive position I did think he would be used more as CB too.

However going on his highlights reel, majority of it he is playing RWB, he looks very comfortable with attacking from that position, and seems ideally suited to the Muñoz role.

I would like to see how good he is on the other side though. One on each side is something to dream about.
You are correct. I'll put my hands up and admit I looked at his stature and assumed he was a CB. I'm actually now more pleased with this signing as we do/did need someone who could cover for Munoz.

So think we need to line up at least two CD's (esp if Lacroix leaves), at least one if he doesnt.

The 12 month contract extension was triggered on 23rd Dec which meant he could not have contract negotiations with foreign clubs.

LOOK, LOOK, I've dared to contradict Willo on a footballing fact......I'm feeling brave!
My understanding is that a contract extension was triggered in Dec 2024 with an end date of Summer 2027, accordingly I believe he could sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in Jan 2027 and depart on a 'Free' in the summer.

Please feel free to contradict me anytime, I will accept your sentiments with good grace and of course my comments which triggered your ripostes could be 'Way off beam' ! I am no omniscient sage.

I misunderstood what you meant by `In January` I took that as referring to January just gone. (could used rather than can)

tiny semantics of no real consequence, and please accept my comments about contradicting you in the spirit it was meant. Not an attack on you personally but more out of respect for your encyclopaedic knowledge. 🙂

You have every right to contradict a fusty ancient relic and there was no reason for me to be offended in any shape or form.Your comments were received with good grace.
Apropos 'Encyclopedic knowledge', my tapestry of erudition contains gargantuan holes and my recall has decreased in speed with advancing age.

A lot depends on what system Sage plays. If it is 4 at the back, we are currently well stocked with Lacroix, Richards, Canvot and Riad. Midfield, with only Wharton and Kamada starting-quality and both potentially leaving in a year's time is a different story

Not sure he's an unhappy player.

He had his head turned by AC Milan, which i don't think is unreasonable, and then the deal collapsed.

Since then he has got fit again and reclaimed his place and started to score goals again, including the winner in the conf final.

Like MG he knows if he keeps performing he will get a very decent offer in 12 months time.

The only issue will come if he does start sulking and not performing on the pitch.

It’s all just opinions and we really dont know what the player or the club will be doing.
But a player that wont sign up for more of the same signals he will go one way or another. In Matetas case only a dodgy knee is the reason he still wears our shirt.
I dont disagree with you on what he might do if he doesnt go, He seems genuine. The point I make is he is the only first teamer in this position, making him the most likely to leave if a decent offer is made for him . If the club do a financial permutation on the lines of yours then maybe even he is not for sale. I would just point out that if he ran the contract down the club would still have to buy a replacement only from scratch without his fee to play with.

I’m thinking any JP decision will be left until he knows whether he’s a World Cup winner or not and whether he might have come on as a sub and scored a goal or two, because if both things happen we won’t be able to get his head through the Selhurst doors and he’ll want away, but if it goes the other way he’ll love the club again and will be happy to stay

Surely he can't stay? We've spent the money for him already on his replacement. Will we not have a large hole in the finances if we fail to sell Mateta?

we only have JSL and Nketiah as forwards so surely if JP was to leave, regardless of whether we get £20m or £40m for him, a replacement will be required.

With the money spent on JSL i'm not expecting another like for like, however, a younger player who can hopefully develop over the next couple of years is surely required.

Eddie N has shown that he can't lead the line and can't be relied on due to constant injuries so A.N.Other option is definitely required.

I suppose the other option is to utilise the loan market. However, this can be expensive and quite risky in terms of success.

He has to be sold for this reason alone unless people really believed we spunked 50 million on a back up striker
I don’t think so, neither of them will be ‘back up’ strikers if mateta does stay, it’s a squad game now and once JP came back into contention last season it worked quite well using them both for different games and replacing each other, JP started firing again because he didn’t look quite so bloody knackered as he did before Christmas and although not prolific Larsen did score four which might bode well for next season

‘Sometimes’, players can respond more positively when a new coaching team and style of play is introduced.

I watched the first day training video uploaded today on the CPFC website with interest. There were a lot of players involved who were very much ‘out of favour’ under OG.

I guess for some, a clean slate and a fresh opportunity to impress could be a game changer!

Total madness. I’ve never got my head around this. (Don’t suppose JP has either)

What struck me about that video is the amount of hangers on just standing around in the background watching. Endless people in tracksuits. Modern football and the enormity of staff. Are they all necessary, or does it create an overwhelming atmosphere
