They are saying new information has come to light. Maybe true, if they have found some incriminating material on social media. However, why were counter terrorism police involved in his arrest? Surely local CID would have been more the capable ( on second thoughts 🤣)

I believe the Police previously said there was nothing to suggest the murder was politically motivated but were keeping an open mind. They are now saying that due to new information and evidence coming to light.

I'd hazard that there was nothing that linked the original guy who was arrested to anything political but that may not be true of the guy they have arrested in Rotherham.

I don't think that constitutes that they had made an assumption, there is a slight, subtle but important difference between the two, and I get that it isn't totally clear but the reality is they have to be very careful with what they say so as not to cause prejudice legally but balance that with the modern world and rumour mill which is perpetuated on social media.

The Police gave statements that allowed the media to mislead people, when in truth they should have said there is no position on it at this time.
