Loan Watch - Odsonne Eduoard

What a way to endear oneself to supporters, advocating the return of Edouard who was abject for us and had ONE successful season in a league inferior in quality to the PL !
It says it all about the quality that Celtic play against that I think he scored 80 odd goals for them 😳

He wasn't abject. He is a striker who gets on the end of crosses. He was expected to hold the ball up in a 3-4-2-1, when it just doesn't suit him. Like Nketiah, he needs to play alongside a front man like Strand Larsen.
It really depends on Sage's preferred formation.
Sage isn't wholly wedded to one shape, but he has played the same formation as Glasner often.

He generally plays 3-4-2-1, 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and 3-4-3. Expect us to keep a similar system as with OG, only pressing more frequently.

Sage managed to use Edouard successfully in the same role as he was used here under OG. The question is whether it's just down to the difference in leagues, or Sage's coaching.

If we do bring him back, hopefully it will prove that Sage is the difference.

This is what I find odd. For the system to work you need a hard working forward like JPM. Edouard never showed that at Palace hence the criticism of him being lazy.

Has Sage really turned him around if so WOW turning a lazy player into a grafter rarely happens. Or is the French league played at a much slower pace so the target man doesn't have to put as much effort into it as say a PL player would?

I honestly don't know never having watched Edouard in France.

Eduoard coming back?
He has 3 expensive players in Nketiah Johnson and JSL that he needs to get producing. The suggestion we bring in another striker on loan is crazy, especially when past experience is that he wasn’t very good for us.

seen enough of our current attacking trio to know it's not good enough to be a successful goalscoring unit. I'd argue two of them need to go, however Edouard coming back seems totally mad, and I don't think would help the new manager endear himself to the fans. In fact, I'd question his general ability to cut it in the prem if he really thinks OE is the answer!

I agree. I think Steve will even know we're not going to want Edouard back. I was ecstatic we got a fee for him.

There have been many lazy strikers over the years.

They do not have to be the centre of industrial effort if they only work for 2 minutes a game but still score a goal.

The annoyance is when their laziness feeds into constantly straying offside and fluffing the one or two chances they are gifted by the hard grafting midfield.

It's when that happens that a player finds himself sent out on loan to a mid table team in a mid ranking European league.

I feel the same.

Part of me wants to believe that Sage got a much better tune out of him and understands how best to play him.

Palace and Leicester didn't... but he never had a chance under Glasner.

Perhaps he knows him and likes him as a back-up option?

I think Edouard did initially show those qualities when he first came here, but as time went on he changed and became "lazy" or appeared so. I don't claim to know the reason for the change. If Sage has been able to reverse that change, I see no issue in him coming back.

He's spent the last season with him and obviously likes him, he will know more what he's like right now than we will. I'm not pushing for it, but if Pierre is pushing for it I wouldn't be one to question him.

He's just not that good?

Past PSG, none of the other French sides ever do anything do they? They're like relegation Premier League sides/ top Championship sides. On a par with Celtic and Rangers.
I would say the top 8 are definitely better than Celtic and Rangers level, and are above relegation level EPL.

Strasbourg came 8th and we know their quality first-hand.

Monaco, 7th, have a decent squad.

As do Marseille, 5th, full of rotten human beings admittedly, but a good side if we are just talking about ability.

Lyon, 4th, we have been eyeing up a few of their's for good reason. Good place to look for a firesale right now.

Lens played quality football and that has led to us pinching their manager. Odsonne was a part of that picture, as strange as it may seem to some.

He was when he first joined us. There was a point where he seemed the better of the two against Mateta. It may be the case that he is again at that level since working with Sage.

I don't know if he has got back to his prime, I would suggest none of us do know. Unless a Ligue Un expert is reading here waiting to reply.

Fair enough, how have they got on in Europe?

Edoaurd is a very technical player but he desperately needs to add hold up play and pressing. Which I can't see will somehow have magically happened. Unless he's completely transformed somehow. Seems ridiculously unlikely.

Odd son would be at least as good as Johnson or JSL and could easily do 20 games between England and Europe especially if we’re stupid enough to let Mateta go.

Palace are not in the driving seat with Mateta. Stupidity does not come into it. It's likely 30m now, 15 in january or 0 this time next year. Pick your poison
