Guessand

I think he's good and bearing in mind he hasnt played much, he has added something - he loves to take players on and offers an attacking threat. He can help pick up the speed of a game straight away, a bit like JP when he was coming on as sub.

In light of increased future revenues with being in the Europa League next season and the fact we need a bigger squad than last, I hope the club can afford to sign him.

Standard Sport understands that while Palace remain interested in Guessand, they will now face competition from clubs in England and Europe for the 24-year-old’s signature.

Guessand joined the Eagles on loan in January with an option to buy at around £28million.
After a productive start to life in south-east London, a knee injury curtailed the Ivory Coast international's progress, and he played just 29 minutes of Palace’s final eight league games.
Guessand, who came off the bench as the south Londoners lifted the Conference League last week, has been included in the Ivory Coast’s World Cup squad and will then return to Aston Villa as he assesses his options ahead of next season.

Guessand is understood to have been happy at Palace, but uncertainty over who will replace outgoing manager Oliver Glasner means neither the club nor the player are expected to make a decision imminently.

Aston Villa have already received multiple enquiries about Guessand’s availability this summer, with Unai Emery expected to move on from the former Nice striker just a year after signing him for £30m.
Speaking in January, Emery admitted that he did not initially want to let Guessand leave for Palace but acknowledged that the move was “something good for the club”.

"It's something similar like with [Donyell] Malen. I was happy with him. I didn't want him to leave. But I accepted it is something good deal for the club,” Emery said.

Personally I was never impressed with Guessand at A.Villa and he has done precious little at our club to alter my opinion.
Perhaps I have just not seen the best version of Guessand.
I might be interested at a lower price or if we weren't stuck with Nketiah, Larsen and Johnson. If Mateta goes, we need to make the right choice to replace him and it will take a really good manager to achieve that in terms of goals from any of the aforementioned trio
Palace actually have a positive goal difference when Guessand has been on the pitch in league games. Johnson's is horrific. Almost -1 per 90 minutes!

He doesn't look to be a £25 million player to me, but some could argue that it looks a bargain in comparison to the £35 million spent on Johnson.
It's all relative I suppose.
We have to hope optimistically that Sage ( or A N Other) turns them into £50 million players along with Franca.

Without add-ons they have cost us over £100 Million !

Dunfermline fans were speculating on their site the other day that for the upcoming window they might have £4,000 to spend and hoped to get a couple of players for that. Normally they get by pretty much on free transfers, loans and out of contract and youth players. They got to the play-offs and the cup final this year.
Didn't win either though.

Might be worth sending Johnson's agent up to Scotland. We might still be able to get 2 grand?

He's not worth the 28 million for me He's a 15-20 million
Which is probably why Palace have not taken up the option to buy at 28

I can see us going back in when the summer window opens at the numbers you suggest but then we will likely have competition for his signature .

Decent player but I guess it will depend on the new manager whoever that is if this goes any further .

Agreed. If the new manager wants him I am fine with that. Because we don't have a manager Parish allowed the deal to expire we can always go back in with a reduced fee. If there is a bidding war with other clubs he's not worth it.

The new manager must be given as much funds as possible in which to shape his team.

I'd agree with Parish here, 28 million is overpriced......then again I still can't get over 45 million for Larsen.

Not a bad forward but that kind of money.....wow.

Guessand's chances of signing for us, even at a reduced price, are hamstrung by two things.

Firstly, he is erratic. He had some very good moments in some games but a lot of periods of anonymity and frustration. Injury aside, he had a chance to convince palace of his worth and he didn't. All that about waiting for the new manager before making any decisions etc is a red herring. The club has a director of football and if Guessand had done better we'd have signed him already.

Secondly, we already have too many underperforming forwards. It is likely that Mateta will leave, which means we only have Sarr we can rely on. Even if you are optimistic about Larsen, Johnson, Pino, and Nketiah coming good, they haven't done so yet. Against that backdrop we surely can't sign another forward who may or may not be consistently effective, even if he is a fairly exciting wildcard.

Yep, very good points.

At the end of the day, if he can be signed for and play for free, yeah why not he may come good.

With regard to the cost of both however, I'm certain that money can be better spent elsewhere.

He was bought in January when there is a 30% despearation supplement added. If Mateta had not been leaving they would probably not have bought him. I think he is okay, probably in the wrong formation for him. Scored a brace vs Sweden yesterday. Not a £40m player but very few are. The money spent these days is ridiculous. Johnson again is okay, but not a £30m player. If he didnt have that milestone round his neck he is a decent squad player. Players sometimes take a while to settle. Mateta, Olise, Kamada, Canvot and Eze took a little while each. If you forget the fees and just assess the squad as a whole. How much some cost is irrelevant to me. Glasner didnt care either. Thats for the club to balance. Kamada cost £0 (but had high wages). Wharton cost £20m but is paid peanuts.

Sensible analysis.

The new season is a new era both in manager and the team.

Fingers crossed it's a positive one for our league position.....because it'll be a large number of fixtures again and we just didn't have enough of a quality squad at the start of our campaign.

Question is who is leaving exactly other than the known leavers.....Can we afford the quality to replace them or have the scouting nous to pick the correct relatively cheap quality from the championship that will impress.
