Reform

Lots of comments about whether the Nazis were actually right or left wing on here. There may be a truth that we can all agree with, which is that they were appalling.

When I consider myself quite right wing I am talking about the scale and intervention of central government in our lives. Stating the obvious, right wing is less involvement and left wing is more. I appreciate that there are some other measures of right and left wing, including nationalistic tendencies and adherence to tradition being right wing. On these scores the Nazis were right wing in some ways but left wing in others. The important point is they were appalling extremists with characteristics of both right and left.

As a right winger I want to see a government which reduces regulation and promotes an expectation that people should take responsibility for themselves, intervening only where really necessary. To me the alternative is a victims' society with an increasingly unproductive and therefore impoverished economy, leaving all of us worse off. But I also understand that an equivalent left winger may seek increased regulation to protect the vulnerable and achieve a more even society. They think I am heartless, but I think they are unrealistic. We shouldn't hate each other. We need to be together against extremism, both right and left.

As I am every bit as opposed to far left politics as I am to far right why the surprise? As a centralist I see merit in both right and left approaches and think using the best of both pays dividends.
The disingenuousness is breathtaking.

We can discuss any politics you like. Start a thread on something. Maybe subsidiarity or something?
You start one if you wish. I might join in if I think anything needs to be said, but might not. I don’t actually see much truly left wing politics anywhere in the UK these days. Not in any way that concerns me. I see much more danger from the right, who are always complaining about a mythical left.

There is much there I can agree with, especially your last two sentences. So let’s concentrate on them rather than the bits I might disagree about.

Finding compromises and ways to work together towards shared goals is what all responsible politicians do every day. Unfortunately not all politicians these days are responsible. Some possess the aroma of extremism that you rightly despise.

At the end of the day we all know what comparing the right to nazis and hitler did in the US elections. The left were laughed at and the rest they say is history.

So by all means keep on comparing reform and farage to hitler and the nazis!

Let's just hope Farage increases his security comming up to the next election.
