Lots of comments about whether the Nazis were actually right or left wing on here. There may be a truth that we can all agree with, which is that they were appalling.
When I consider myself quite right wing I am talking about the scale and intervention of central government in our lives. Stating the obvious, right wing is less involvement and left wing is more. I appreciate that there are some other measures of right and left wing, including nationalistic tendencies and adherence to tradition being right wing. On these scores the Nazis were right wing in some ways but left wing in others. The important point is they were appalling extremists with characteristics of both right and left.
As a right winger I want to see a government which reduces regulation and promotes an expectation that people should take responsibility for themselves, intervening only where really necessary. To me the alternative is a victims' society with an increasingly unproductive and therefore impoverished economy, leaving all of us worse off. But I also understand that an equivalent left winger may seek increased regulation to protect the vulnerable and achieve a more even society. They think I am heartless, but I think they are unrealistic. We shouldn't hate each other. We need to be together against extremism, both right and left.
