That is now the new normal, i'm afraid. It's all down to the new 'EES' system(Entry & Exit System) required for non- EU travellers. You will get your passport & boarding pass checked at baggage, then you need your boarding pass to get through security, after going into the departure lounge, upon going to the departure gate you need to queue up to get through e-gates(IF, they're working) then get your passport stamped by border control & finally when boarding the aircraft you will need you pass to board.
I'm fairly lucky, as i can skip the queue's due to having SA(special Assistance), but, still have to go through the same process. Thing that's causing massive queues now is the fact that most people haven't had the retina scan nor their fingerprints done.
