Romaine Esse

All Lampard would be thinking at 1 nil down is who he can bring on to get him some points. If Esse was great at Coventry til the end of the season they would sign him if they are promoted or not.

The Coventry subs were all forwards/wingers/midfielders. That’s 10 (TEN) attacking players that he preffered to start or change before Esse.

In fairness to Esse, I'm sure that when Lampard is picking his team he must consider giving preference to his permanent players. He is better off building a team from them than one from borrowed parts. There loanees are likely to disappear when the season ends whereas his own players will not. If a loanee develops into a better player then it's the parent club who stands to benefit, whereas if your own players develop it is you who have more valuable assets.

None of which overcomes the fact that if Esse was likely to be a regular match winner he'd get games, but if it's a close run thing between him and another player, he might be the more likely to be left out.

I suppose that's the problem with Esse joining a team who are flying. Harder to get games. I saw that Adaramola is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, and so has now experienced league 2, 1, and the championship. Is being at the worst team in the division, but playing every week, better than being at Coventry? Probably, I'd have thought.

Mind you, we didn't buy Adaramola for quite a lot of money, so perhaps the expectation is different.

This is very telling.

Many of us see the talent in him, but he seems to have trouble nailing down a first team shirt and there must be reasons why.

Part of me thinks he hasn't found his position. Maybe he is a number 10 when most teams play with one up?

He does need to start making an impact somewhere soon and I hope it is with us in the top flight.

All fair enough points. However, he hasn't exactly had much first team football for a while. He needs a few games before you are going to see the best of him. Reserves and U21s games can help him to a certain point. But none of us are going to know what he's actually like or going to like until he at least plays for half a season to a season of football. When he was a regular at Millwall, his record was good enough for us to see enough to pay a significant amount. We then haven't used him enough for him to develop.
If we had used him more as a sub then let him play a bigger role in the squad after a while, I'm pretty sure he'd be doing better than he is currently. Perhaps we should have loaned him out sooner? I don't think it's too late for Esse but he might not get the time he needs. I hope he's trying really hard - which will give him the best chance of being picked.

Time to face facts. If he cant get into a highly successful Coventry team in the Championship that are playing with little pressure at the moment he is unlikely to make it in the Prem at this stage of his career.
I'm not saying he cant come back stronger in a couple of years. Right now he is not good enough.

Makes me laugh how some fans relentlessly attack Pino yet they think Esse is quality! 🤣

Being good enough and being ready are too different things. Pino is similar, frankly. He's good enough but not quite ready for the Premier League. For different reasons, obviously. Culture, physicality and style for Pino. I think, experience, mentality and awareness for Esse. I don't doubt for a moment that both have the required technical skills.

Pino will be a far better aquisition for Palace next season. Esse wont.

I think a lot of people are desperate for Esse to be better than he is because they think it will somehow vindicate them about Glasner or give them more ammo to ‘I told ya so’.

As you say, in reality I think he’s just not up to standard yet.

Really? That's interesting. I doubt it very much. In fact, on what I've seen so far my biggest concern is that in attempting the thankless task of replacing Eze we've scattergun overspent on a range of options who are not only miles short of his class, but also just not good enough at all.

To me, Johnson has some pedigree but has been so anonymous that we might as well play with ten men. Pino is such a liability that it's like the opposition are playing with twelve. Guessand seems incredibly hit and miss, beyond even the most generous margin for error for erratic attacking players. Esse has shown almost no sign of having sufficient quality. Uche actually seems a better bet than most of them, but that's only because of how poorly they've all played rather than the few positive things he's done. Larsen looks ok so far but it's such a lot of money that he'll have to do far more to justify it. Nketiah just hasn't happened at all. Thank God for Sarr.

Of course, I hope that they all come good. In fact, I'd say task No1 for the new manager is getting value for money out of the forwards we have bought. He'll have his work cut out, though. The signings have been such a disappointment, and shown so little sign that there is anything there to persevere with, that I'd expect the club are looking at whether they can recoup anything on some of these. Apparently we would, injury permitting, have sold Nketiah to West Ham as well as Mateta to Milan. It would be interesting to see what would happen if anyone offered us £20m for Johnson, or £10-12m for Pino. Uche won't be here. I can't see that Guessand is worth the agreed price, especially with what we've spent already.

You'd think Esse would have a greater chance of getting in given all this, yet he's been packed off on loan and not recalled even as we continue to struggle. Even if the idea was to get him up and running in some way so that he would be a genuine option for the new manager, it hasn't worked at all so far.

We would tell them to do one is what would happen. Do you seriously think we would sell Johnson given we signed him only weeks ago or Pino when he’s not even had a full season? Let’s see how they get on next season with a manager who wants to be here and has the dressing room.

I think it would pose an interesting question if someone made those sorts of bids for those players. We aren't Chelsea or United, we can't spend big on two or three forwards, see them underperform, park then in the stands and then buy some more. We'd need to sell to buy, and if the club do regret any of these signings then accepting lower offers is the only option.

Again, I hope they all come good, but they've been so incredibly poor that I can't just put it down to a less than Ideal working environment.
