Is this the same Lampard who barely picked Esse in the championship once his usual players were fit?

Yup it doesn't ring true. My take was that as the season progressed Esse dropped down the pecking order at Coventry. If Lampard really does want him I think that says something about his judgement.

It's pretty standard to have a no fee recall clause but that has to be used during transfer windows. Other than that, there can be reasons to terminate the loan. Usually when set criteria aren't met (appearances, role etc) or when the player is unhappy, or a squad emergency. However, in those cases, it can lead to fees for breach of contract. But nobody usually takes loan litigation very far. We had problems a couple of times. Look no further than Uche this season.

Neither of the options are non-standard as such. It has to be negotiated to have one, or to not have one. There is a fairly even split across all the deals done as to which way they go, and different clubs prefer one way or the other for various reasons.

Certainly wouldn't call it a terrible signing. Yes it's not worked out but the fee is relatively small these days and if more than 50% is recouped then I'm fine with taking these types of risks and actual wish we'd do a lot more. Realistically for every 5 of these types of signings you only need 2 or 3 to work out. It's what Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford currently do much better than us.

Sorloth was similar despite a horrific start, because time was on our side we still managed to get a fee back. It's why I can't understand when every now and then we decide to spend 30m plus on a player who has already gone through their 'youthful prospect' phase and therefore very unlikely to increase in value... And hence when it doesn't work out we're left with a player that adds little to the club but it's costing a fortune.

I'd be interested to know why you'd think Esse fits the profile of a Palace player?

Ex-Millwall, seemingly disinterested/attitude issue, over priced and not very good. If that's the profile of a typical Palace player we're fooked!

When he signed I shared the view that he fits the profile of a Palace player - certainly ones who have done well in the past.

Slippery and tricky pacey wide forwards who are unpredictable, erratic, and lacking the consistency which - if they had it - would see them in a Champions League team. Even so, on their day they get the crowd on their feet and influence results over the course of a season.

From memory, Bolassie, Julian Gray, Rubins, Lakis, Bakary Saka, and probably many others fit this sort of description. Zaha initially was erratic but developed into a talismanic figure for us. Arguably you could say tha same about Eze.

Where I think the comparisons fall short is when a player joins but then fails to make an impact in the medium term, which is where I think the club is with Esse sadly. I hope he comes good but the likelihood is that if he has not made his mark by now then he unlikely will.
