All Lampard would be thinking at 1 nil down is who he can bring on to get him some points. If Esse was great at Coventry til the end of the season they would sign him if they are promoted or not.
The Coventry subs were all forwards/wingers/midfielders. That’s 10 (TEN) attacking players that he preffered to start or change before Esse.

In fairness to Esse, I'm sure that when Lampard is picking his team he must consider giving preference to his permanent players. He is better off building a team from them than one from borrowed parts. There loanees are likely to disappear when the season ends whereas his own players will not. If a loanee develops into a better player then it's the parent club who stands to benefit, whereas if your own players develop it is you who have more valuable assets.
None of which overcomes the fact that if Esse was likely to be a regular match winner he'd get games, but if it's a close run thing between him and another player, he might be the more likely to be left out.
I suppose that's the problem with Esse joining a team who are flying. Harder to get games. I saw that Adaramola is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, and so has now experienced league 2, 1, and the championship. Is being at the worst team in the division, but playing every week, better than being at Coventry? Probably, I'd have thought.
Mind you, we didn't buy Adaramola for quite a lot of money, so perhaps the expectation is different.
