Mateta

I'm not joining the pile on against Mateta.

The guy wanted to leave last Summer and has been playing with an injury.

I expect he will have surgery now, but if he is playing in a Palace shirt, then it makes no sense to barrack him. If he scores goals, then everybody should be happy.

I hope he can get fit and finish the season with a flourish. Then we can wave him off with no hard feelings. He is an FA Cup winner.
Agree but he does deserve a bit of humourous stick.
All said JP is a Palace legend and helped bring 2 trophies to us!
Think he should get the surgery done asap and he may well be fit in time for a World Cup call up. Seriously think he's f***ed his knee up kicking corner flags though

Ye well put. It's classic case of poor guidance and footballer IQ. JP always came across as a fun lad but I think it's fair to say maybe not the sharpest tool in the box.

His goal of playing in the World Cup is a good one, and I think his best chance of that would have been to have sorted his form out and start banging them in for us. Get the call up and then get the 'big club' move. I don't think anyone would have begrudged him that.

His agent obviously saw some dollar signs and through a series of poor decisions JP and his agent have now put everything at risk. For the rest of the season JP is no longer guaranteed to be a regular and light has been shone on major fitness concerns.

I said in another post, I hope it all works out for him as I'd still enjoy seeing him at the world cup and if he gets there it means we would have benefited from 'good' Mateta and can then sell him for maximum value.

I think that connection is largely in the minds of fans. Players have careers to think about.

Sure it's obvious that fans and players have a common interest while a player is at the club which creates a natural bond, but the promise of more money and status and they are usually off like a shot. There is no loyalty.
I'm not claiming that players have to stay loyal to a club. I'm saying that they should remain professional, even though they are actively seeking an exit. If you've signed a contract, fulfil that contract until out of said contract - it's as simple as that. There's the difference between loyalty and professionalism.

I don't agree with the connection being in the minds of fans. Why do our players do so much work in the community if that connection doesn't exist? Why does Mateta wave his arms at the crowd to gee us up at every corner? Why does Henderson turn and celebrate with the fans when we score a goal? Even the players that have left the club - why would Guehi put out a 6 minute goodbye video to Palace if he didn't care about the fans? Why did Eze state in an interview after the leaving the club that the best part of winning the FA cup was giving so many fans the opportunity to experience that feeling of winning something?

Probably because they are contractually obliged to in a lot of cases.

PR with fans is part of the job. It is a commercial necessity. There might be a mutual respect and camaraderie that develops in that process, but let's be honest. You move to a better paid job, wave your old work friends goodbye, and make new ones. In this case, that means fans and fellow players.

Guehi did a great job of keeping his head down all the time a move was on the cards. Mateta is in a somewhat different situation where he felt he needed to push for a move. It is hard to remain a fan favourite when that becomes public, but Mateta has continued to play with an injury, so I don't feel that he has been unprofessional, on the pitch at least.

Definitely not unprofessional on the pitch ….. just p*ss poor!

I understand the PR side of it but I would argue that players who connect with fans go the extra mile when it comes to their job. The examples I gave before would fall into that category for me, that's not PR as part of their job - especially as Guehi and Eze don't play for us any more. I think it's important to remember that football players are human beings and not robots. Most of them want that connection with fans, just as much as the fans do.

I would say that Mateta has been unprofessional because he refused to play. He's played through injury to give himself the best chance to get the move away that he wants and when that started to materialise for him, he downed tools and refused to play. Refusing to do what you are contracted to do is probably as unprofessional as you can get. There's ways to force a move from the club and Guehi, Eze and I'd even argue Olise are perfect examples of how to get a move that pleases all parties. Mateta is only out to please himself and has let the club down. It's not a big deal and I certainly won't boo him if he plays for us again because I don't think that's helpful for anyone but he's definitely given people some ammunition

Henderson has intimated there is a problem in the dressing room, if it is Mateta, and it sounds like it, U21s for you old son, or sort out an expectable loan

How on earth does it sound like Mateta is the issue based on what he said? You're making that assumption to fit your own agenda. All he said regarding our bad form was 'inside the building we know exactly why that is, but it's not to be spoken about outside'. It's the standard 'keep it in the dressing room' line.

I mentioned to another fan that JPM should have the operation now so that he is fit to be sold in the summer.

They pointed out what if it's not an operable problem? Perhaps that is why he has been nursing it as there is no solution?

If it is a simple operation there is no point wasting time, get in done now.

Not at all surprised:

"From what I hear" blah blah - yeah alright... From what I've heard (from a man walking his dog on a south coast beach) is that someone in the upper echelons of the Palace administration tells cheap journos what to write...

Obviously no need of a reply

He could just as easily be referring to the fact the first team squad were knackered from playing so many games because the squad is too small and has too many kids on the bench….. but unlike my manager I’m not going to say that in public.

Or he could be saying, in code, that the half time cuppa has never been the same since tea lady Mavis left on a big money transfer.

How do you sell a crocked dog, that hasn't banged in goals for many a month, and has an appetite for premium dog food ?
Realistically, I don't see any takers. And certainly none who want to pay his agent's unrealistic wage demands
Mateta and his agent have just royally messed the entire situation up.
