Jaydee Canvot

"For the moment" is a good point. As I said myself he's very raw.

I think he played out of position against the arse.

My main point is, let's not make the kid with terrific potential a scapegoat.

Not wishing to sound confrontational; but apart from the 2 goal mistakes you mention, what were the other ones he's made?

He started against Brentford, Brighton and Villa which resulted in no goals against Palace. Thanks A i. Lol

No problem I will try and look at his appearances and see which I might have recorded and respond if I can find some.

I think youi'll find that Riad was the intended replacement for Guehi but injuries have set that back 18 months.
I remember watching him against Stockport from the Holmesdale and you could see he's a good passer of the ball, but like Canvot his decision-making needed some work (I seem to remember him making a couple of errors that we got away with because of the quality of the opposition). A lot to ask of him to come in now and be the answer to Guehi leaving.

He's young and only going to learn and improve by making a few mistakes. Buying ready made players is expensive and out of reach of our budget. A midfielder makes a mistake it goes unnoticed, but a defender or keeper there is no hiding place.
Marc Guehi was young when we signed him and he slotted in and looked the business from day one. Canvot, much as I feel for him has looked consistently out of his depth. It’s right what you say about no hiding place at the back, but he doesn’t ever look comfortable and feels like a fcuk up waiting to happen. How long do we persevere with him because he’s young and still learning?

clearly we all want the lad to succeed but it is a big ask to come to a new country at such a young age and adapt quickly.
He was clearly bought for the future but without any other incomings was always going to be needed this season, even if we had kept Marc.
I do agree i constantly sense a mistake as he looks a little uncomfortable on the ball - even against Villa, when he performed well, he did an air shot/miskick that could/should have led to a goal. Only a few days before he did similar in the last seconds v Fulham that should have cost us a point.

He is supposedly 6ft 2, but looks a bit smaller. He definitely doesn't dominate headers.

Hopefully OG has more time to train and talk with him over the next few weeks as he is an almost certain starter (assume Lerma will play CM next week etc).

For me i really think we missed a trick early doors when he signed as he should have played a few U21 games to acclimitise and gain a bit of confidence etc.

Same with all the youngsters really. Esse, Uche etc should have played more U21 and OG should insist the U21 play the same formation as the first team. I know the latter two have played occasionally but this seems to have been used as a punishment more than a plan

To be fair to him, I thought he looked very comfortable against Brighton when Guehi was injured. He did brilliantly in that game and I think got man of the match. Players can go through bad phases and a lack of game time doesn't help with that.
I'd also add that Marc Guehi had played a season at Swansea before we signed him, which is great exposure to the physicality and pace of the English game. Canvot probably needs a loan move to a similar club to Swansea to gain that experience.

I think it's probably a bit unfair to compare Canvot to Guehi as I really believe Guehi could be one of the top 5 English centre backs to have played in the Premier League. Canvot's ceiling is way below that but his ceiling aligns more with our club. Guehi was always gonna reach the top

Guehi was however 2 years older than Canvot with a couple seasons experience of Championship football.

Canvot has much less senior experience and before us zero experience of English football plus he's adapting to new country/culture.

So I think comparing the two doesn't make sense. Guehi was brought to start, Canvot has a lot of potential but needs to be developed properly. I don't think Glasner has done this well so far.

The two suicidal passes this season I was referring to was Chelsea and the Larnaca game that both ended up with the opposition scoring directly.
To be fair you would have been justified in referring to Sunday. Before he played the pass for their first goal he had already played a blind pass across our area almost leading to a scoring chance for them

I'd add that Canvot didn't get tight enough or aerial enough to the first goal scorer in the FA Cup 3rd Round match.

I really like him as a player. But as others have said he is being exposed by the system which does not help and the midfield is being overrun. Plus he has a mistake in him and is low on confidence. That's a recipe for disaster.

terrible pass as it was on Sunday, our defence positioning was woeful for that goal.

Mitchell was our last defender and was in the Chelsea half, despite Palace not really attacking at the point when Canvot tried to pass to him. Where was Lacroix and to a lesser extent Richards? I would have expected at least one of them to be positioned on the half way line, especially as Canvot had pushed forward on the left.

It reminded me of that terrible goal v Everton last season from the Mitchell throw in - despite the throw in being a little in the Everton half all our defenders were caught up field.

Really poor organisation and a lack of common sense

Was going to post the same thing; Yes Canvot's choice of pass wasn't ideal, but the rest of the team didn't help him out. Canvot was given no options - Mitchell at the least should have made a move to give him an easier pass. And given the other 'mistake' was the handball which wasn't a handball, he didn't do that much wrong, but it feels as though he's being overly punished for it.

JC is young, he's gonna make mistakes - jeez, there's been plenty of these examples over the years. I remember a fairly recent one involving a shocking throw in that ended up going straight to an (everton?) player. or another a few seasons back where a new(ish) player did almost the same thing.

On top of that, he's been hauled off a couple of times, most notably vs Arsenal in The FACup where 1) he was up against a v.good Martinelli, and 2) he was being played out of position at right (wing?) back.

We have to be careful not to completely destroy this lads confidence. Treated correctly, he could be a VERY good defender, and IMO he's not far off PL quality. He needs Gametime, and to be part of a settled defensive unit. The problem is if we can give him that given our current issues. But please, cut him some slack.

We will not find an adequate replacement for MG immediately, if there was one Man City and Liverpool would have bought them. Canvot might be the answer eventually, he might not. Players can take a year or more to come good. Lacroiux, Munoz and Richards have made cock ups or got roasted by opposition too this season but they have built up a lot of credit. He will learn, if not he will be shipped out. Hopefuly Chadi will take up the mantle in the short term. Sadly it looks like we may coast along until the new manager arrives although they played better against Chelsea, just a couple of mistakes by Canvot and Mateta and the Ref cost them.

He’d get cut some slack for £2 million, maybe. Not £20 + million. Hope he succeeds , but f**ck me that’s a gamble.
So far he’s been w*nk, let’s hope he gets better
