Trump ridicules Starmer over Diego Garcia deal .

Trump can change his mind , That’s what people want him to do over Greenland for example and by the same token Starmer can do the same , Do you never change your mind ?
I’m certainly open to be persuaded that the Diego Garcia deal is great but nothing I’ve read or heard is remotely persuasive .
Trump isn’t allowed to change his mind apparently. He gets slated for knee jerk reactions but when he reconsiders he is wrong. ! If he changed his mind over Greenland it would be the right decision I guess for some.

To repeat what I wrote to Mr Owen:

The Trump administration vetted it in May 25 and reported the done deal in glowing terms. They did so unequivocally, in black and white, published.

Do people really think they would have done so if it was unacceptable to them? All the lawyers, military advisors, politicians?

With its strategic importance so obvious, they would've had a great input into the treaty. Of course they would.

There has been no decision by Trump over what is going to happen to Greenland and his 'change of mind' is only to bully, nothing else. That's the difference: one deal is signed and sealed, the other matter is not.

Really, my friend, think about it.

Will Starmer crawl out from the rock he’s been hiding under today and face the music over the Diego Garcia giveaway ..
He owes the country a more detailed explanation as to why Labour have given away a valuable military asset .
Trump might be contrary over many things but it doesn’t stop his views on this deal being spot on .
He has done none of those things. The UK, not Starmer, after long negotiations have respected the rule of law to secure the base primarily for the benefit of the US military.

Until recently we regarded the USA as our ally and doing this as our duty. The way Trump now sees things he ought to be paying the bill himself.

This exposes, in a very stark way, the difference between us, and the rest of the developed world who believe in a rules based world order that promotes peaceful development, and Trump (and Putin) who don’t and only see might as right.

There are many in the USA who understand the ultimate foolishness of this attitude, knowing it’s simplistic and not in their long term interests. When, and how, they will be able to act is another matter.

We live n dangerous times.

Not to forget that they bled us white in WW2, so much so that we were still paying them back up until very recently. They were also the only country to make a profit out of the war.

They're not our friends, nor have they ever been.

You have unintentionally identified the biggest problem the world has faced since WW2.

Which is that Trump doesn’t have a mind. He has an ego and a very big mouth. He says the first thing that comes into his head, then convinces himself it’s brilliant and bullies his sycophantic “team” to agree.

The things that come into his head being put there by those manipulating him, the front man for that process being Stephen Miller. Who is a seriously nasty man with some even nastier men behind him trying to implement the policies described in Project 2025. Something Trump denied having even heard of.

Trump is an actor. It’s all show. All about him. He is undeniably exceptionally good at it. He deserves an Oscar, but never the Peace Prize.

How he will be stopped is less important than how the people behind him can be stopped. They have their replacement already in place, Vance, who is potentially much smarter than Trump and probably even more dangerous.

They're not our friends, nor have they ever been.
Lord Palmerston’s famous 1848 speech to the House of Commons declared: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow". This maxim emphasized that foreign policy should prioritize national interest over rigid alliances.

Like it or not, if the US had stayed neutral in WW2 it is entirely plausible Europe and Asia would be under totally German and Japanese control respectively

No doubt about it, although the war would have eventually come to America even without Pearl Harbour.
Had Germany created the atom bomb first then things would have been different.

Europe would be Soviet. Large parts of Asia too. But the islands would have remained Japanese. The questions then would be the RAF, The Royal Navy and the Atomic bomb.
