Romaine Esse

His confidence was shattered against Liverpool subbed on then subbed off and then was moaned about in a interview after.
He's a young player that needs a bit of love so hope he gets it at Coventry and comes back a new player

Good luck

Got what he deserved he must have done other things that OG was not happy about it's rare he picks out players.

He should shine in championship which maybe his level.

Spoke to a Cov. Supporter in gym who went to their game at Stoke. Said he showed flashes in game, one in particular. Not displeased with loan , but as I discussed OG issue he thought he could see where that came in. Only one game but hopefully loan will work out on both sides.

He's capable of brilliance, but what he needs to improve is the basic stuff. It's no good doing two great things if the rest of the game you give the ball away, run into corners and commit silly fouls. I still have hope for him to make it with us, but a lot will depend on his attitude.

If Esse was to return and be a success here it would be a first, I can't actually think of anyone who has.

The present academy players on the bench have not been out on loan to my knowledge.

It is more realistic to regard a loan as a gradual exit.

To our detriment.

😎

surely that is Nketiah too and he never gets called out for it.

I imagine his price tag and his experience means he gets away with more, but the fact we were supposedly looking at selling him before he got injured is telling. When everyone was fit he wasn't starting.

My take on Esse is this ; he has potential. But very limited experience even at Championship level.

I think he would have benefited from being loaned back to Millwall after we signed him. Then, in addition to gaining more game time, he could have returned to Palace and had a proper pre season. I think most agree that it's harder for both player and manager to integrate someone during the season.

The move to Coventry enables him to join a club that's in the ascendency and playing with confidence. He's not having to compete with proven Premier League players either.

Now it's up to him. I wish him well and hope this is a first step in getting his career back on track.

How is Franca doing? I got lambasted on here for writing him off early.
Very strange 'purchase' that one. Especially considering his condition before acquisition.
He has played 19 games for Vasco back in Brazil series A where he is on loan, which i suppose is good news considering his health conditions while at Palace, but he failed to score or assist for Vasco or make any serious positive impact. Vasco ended the season in 14th position.
He is under contract with us until 2028, but maybe we have quietly settled as I would imagine his options of a valued return have now declined to probably unlikely.
In my opinion, most players we have 'acquired' with potential to improve over the past five or so seasons were fundamentally not Premier standard when signed and nor did they become it. What I am not aware of is anyone we bought with 'potential' who has since improved enough to become a regular premier league standard regular with us.
I am not including Olise here as once he overcame his pre transfer back injury, scored within ten minutes of being on the pitch in his first senior game.

Yes, i hope we dont sell him on yet.

The Franca buy is very strange, he looked decent in Brazil, but 20m, there must be a story.

It’s difficult to argue that our signings over the last couple of windows have immediately improved us.

Esse and Chilwell (loan) last January, and Sosa, Pino, Canvot and Benitez in summer.
None jump out as roaring successes, even acknowledging that it’s early days.

You would hope for a better hit rate than this and for players to hit the ground running if the club is looking to immediately improve.
We’ve subsequently bought Johnson and may add more players this month, but the two players we are strongly linked with are young players from overseas who don’t have much experience and none of the Premier League.

It’s a conundrum as you want to plan for the future with brilliant young talent, but at the same you don’t want to take a step backwards while finding out if they are up the task.
Franca and Riad have been disappointing for a variety of reasons and some of this can be put down to misfortune , but with our lesser resources we can ill afford too much more ‘misfortune.’

It is indeed very early days for some of them. Foreign players, especially those with poor English, have difficulty settling in and it often takes a whole season. Look at Kamada, Mateta, Speroni, have all taken time to settle. That’s why I don’t think we’ll see the best of Pino until next season. 19 year old Canvot shows considerable promise and was fans MOTM against Villa. As for Chilwell, Sosa and Benitez, they were brought in as squad players and you cannot expect them to hit the top with so little game time.

Esse was brought in with a big reputation, scored his first EPL goal and had an assist against Wolves before the Liverpool match. He was given the last 10 minutes to help keep the ball in the opposition half but fluffed his lines. He now appears too nervous to play his normal game so Coventry is a great opportunity to to get his confidence back. Lampard did especially well with the young players of Chelsea when he was in charge so we may yet Esse back in the EPL.
