FA Cup 3rd Round Macclesfield

Funny talking about Europe, for a team that averages a 12th place finish in the domestic league. In other words, as we have seen, we are totally unequipped for such a venture. Our template thus far is one of Premiership survival, and that's about it, despite winning a domestic cup competition, which is fine and dandy, this season is proving a steep learning curve for anyone who thought we could compete successfully on multiple fronts.
It’s not too dissimilar to when we got promoted. We were not ready and the squad wasn’t good enough for the premier league. Fortunately we managed to stay up for the first few seasons and then became established over time.

Many teams struggle the first time in Europe and Palace are no different, and you are right to point out that with our usual 12th place and never likely to win a cup we didn’t need to build a squad than can cope with 4 competitions. This takes time and the question now is do the club stick or twist in relation to the squad because you can’t do it in one window!

I’m amazed anyone thought we could cope, surely most knew it would be a struggle. With the size of our squad, we’ve struggled in seasons without Europe at times once injuries mount up. It didn’t take a wise old sage to predict it could be a struggle going into the second half of the season, I was just happy to enjoy a bit of European football, if enjoy is the correct word and I’m glad we racked up a decent haul of points nice and early which will help keep us out of serious danger at the bottom

Remember when we finished third in 1991 and if Ron Noades invested in the squad, I'm sure we could have won the title the following year. That one big moment in Palace history wasted. Then the slide followed...

I thought he didn’t invest was because we were denied a place in Europe, also because he was a tight fisted b****** with a whore for a mother.

Palaces history has been defined by these moments in time on many occasions.
Likewise when Man U beat us in the fa cup Fergie kept his job and they went on to dominate England for a decade.
We just seem to end up with the shitty end of the stick!

At the end of the day, all that has happened is that we are out of the FA Cup. The BBC and the casual neutrals had their bit of fun, and we can stop banging on about winning the Cup last season.

Now it's back to the serious business of the Premier League and playing in a cup that we have a realistic chance of winning.

If we had lost to a Premier League, or even a Championship side, many would have seen it as a blessing in disguise. As it is, we have become another great quiz question in a few years.

Let's think about Sunderland. I bet we play a lot better in that game, if you know what I mean.

Do we really have a realistic chance of winning it? We've hardly set the competition on fire so far.

I agree we haven’t got a good enough squad of good and experienced players to compete. This will be the case until we have increased the stadium’s capacity. As yet I haven't seen a spade in the ground yet. I’m afraid OG hasn’t been able to stem the goals from set pieces or improve the winning of crosses on our set pieces. He and his coaching staff look out of ideas.
No wonder really, this was the line up when we played Liverpool earlier in the season. Quality all over the pitch and even the bench wasn't terrible. Until we get some players back we will struggle I think. At least we had a decent start in the league and are 13 points ahead of West Ham!

We won the FA Cup

Win the Conference League for another trophy once we get players back in February and it's another great season by our standards isn't it. Can't get too down by the fact that injuries happened.

Being wise after the event is easy, many teams playing lower sides made many changes and still beat them easily.
Not sure it's particularly wise after the event. Fact is 7 of the 11 are not just professionals but play at international level. Although i disgaree with OG's after-match comments, those players should indeed be good enough to see off such opposition both yesterday and in some Conf. League matches.

Akk very well but that's still only 5 matches and there are 17 more to play. I've seen too much over 50 years to not be slightly nervous.

1 month on from being 4th we are calling for heads to roll , mmmm nothing like a good panic button to start the year , no other club in the lge is having a hit and miss period , that's why we still only 3 points from 7th , stop crying and blaming the world
Nobody is blaming the world… we’re blaming Ollie 😂😂😂

Let’s wait and see…….
-Quarter final of the league cup
-staying in the premier league, could see a decent finishing position
-still in the conference league, one of the favourites to win it

I agree that the players let EVERYONE down yesterday, regardless of formation and tactics.
So do you think that OG has now lost the dressing room as this was not the first time we have seen an insipid performance.
If so is this due to the uncertainty of his future, the players aren’t happy with the tactics, or is there something else that we don’t know about?
Or was it just simply a complete sh!t show and we bounce back against Sunderland?
Unless clear evidence emerges to the contrary, I can only presume it's the last of your options!

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I think we look insipid as we lack creative attacking quality, individual match winners that can turn a tight game our way. We've always had at least one up to now. Zaha of course, Eze, Olise... This is the first time we've tried to get by without that individual quality.

Given how Pino is struggling I imagine we'll end up with a first choice front three of Sarr, Johnson, and Mateta. Plenty of finishing power there, but not much creativity.

Regarding Sunderland, I'd be tempted to pick Uche somewhere in the front line. For all his clear shortcomings, he at least seems capable of making a chance for himself, which doesn't seem to be Johnson's game, and certainly isn't Mateta's.
