FA Cup 3rd Round Macclesfield

A friend that I hadn't heard from in a while texted me to take the mick. I replied with my arguments:

- only 3 of our starters today started the cup final
- we had three under 21s and other fringe players
- we were tired
- the pitch was crap and upset our usual passing game
- they (the opposition) will never play as well again

However, I feel that his reply of "for fu**s sake it was Macclesfield" won the day.

No and no. On the contrary, I thought they gave a reasonable account of themselves but were let down by the senior players around them. In fact, subbing them at HT was cruel IMO, as if Glasner was saying they were to blame. Sosa and Pino should have been off at HT with Drakes-Thomas switched to the left and Rodney left in midfield.
agree, thought Rodney did some lovely passes, I watched Spurs second half, after an awful first half they just conjured up some collective urgency and had a go, we just weren't able to do that, we often ping the ball around in midfield under a press, but Macclesfield were very clever in sitting back and waiting for the first touch before they harried us, so we couldn't come up with any combinations and were rudderless - we never looked like scoring at all for the last 25 minutes until the free kick, just bcos it's Macclesfield it doesn't mean you don't have to work out how to break them down ffs. Hopefully there'll be a strong reaction to this bcos this was shameful.

At the end of the day, all that has happened is that we are out of the FA Cup. The BBC and the casual neutrals had their bit of fun, and we can stop banging on about winning the Cup last season.

Now it's back to the serious business of the Premier League and playing in a cup that we have a realistic chance of winning.

If we had lost to a Premier League, or even a Championship side, many would have seen it as a blessing in disguise. As it is, we have become another great quiz question in a few years.

Let's think about Sunderland. I bet we play a lot better in that game, if you know what I mean.

This is no ordinary loss and should be considered an existential moment in the club's history.

It can...

a) precipitate a complete rethink and shift in priorities, such as accelerated squad investment and a new appetite for risk and board backing of the manager
b) pretend that we are still on course because players will come back and make some incremental investments and maybe Glasner stays and we stay very much onside with FFP / UEFA rules etc.
c) do nothing different, because we think nothing really substantive happened and pretend everything will be OK, hire a new coach in the summer to stay the course and hope for the best (akin to reorganizing the deckchairs on the Titanic)

probably b and c are the same

What do folks think?

Is it possible that things are going on that are not out public?
Are the players just knackered or have they stopped performing for Glasner for a reason, could he have lost the dressing room big time?

I refuse to comment on that Palace performance. Any and everything that could be said about it, already has been and no doubt will again.

But I thought Macclesfield were magnificent. Played their hearts out and throughly deserved the win. Hope they go on to claim more scalps.

A terrible defeat, but all credit to Macclesfield, they didn't try to kick us off the pitch, they played positive attacking football, didn't dive and didn't time waste even in the final minutes - proper football team.

1 month on from being 4th we are calling for heads to roll , mmmm nothing like a good panic button to start the year , no other club in the lge is having a hit and miss period , that's why we still only 3 points from 7th , stop crying and blaming the world
I think this melt down has been coming for some weeks, and even the most rational of posters are dumbstruck at such an insipid performance (myself included, although not always rational!)

It was a cold day against a well organised fired up team on a crap bobbly bouncy pitch and we couldn’t cope with it. BUT we still had chances and as has been the same for months now, we didn’t look like taking them. I can’t remember a time when I was less confident that we can score.

Stormzy, Susanna Reid, Kate Moss, Captain Sensible, Malcolm Muggeridge, Dame Peggy Ashcroft - your boys took a hell of a beating!

That's the problem. With all due respect to Macclesfield, we couldn't have imagined an easier opponent. No matter which way we try to spin it, this defeat is excruciating.
