Worst Ref

I'm not blaming our form on refs, but they need to be discussed

I nominate that CHEAT we had today, the new Clattenberg.

Darren England has refereed Palace 14 times. We've won 1 of those games.

He was the referee who disallowed Eze's goal at Chelsea on the opening day invoking a rule that has never been used before, or since. Nearly 3000 games with no use, except for us.

He ignored a stamp by Neto on Sarr. He sent Wharton off for two yellows but bottled sending Caicedo off for the same in the first half. And then he gives a penalty when it clearly wasn't according to actual laws and IFAB guidance, whilst not using them when a worse offence happened at the other end.

Penalty decision was clearly wrong but Wharton's sending off correct. Both he and Caicedo committed a foul after their yellow cards, but Wharton went one step further. Not really on topic but I'm looking forward to Hughes and Lerma in midfield on his current form.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Wharton committed a foul before the second yellow. All square at that point. Then he went again, although I appreciate you say he pulled out. It was still a foul. But I guess it's about opinions.

The ref was terrible, not for the first time. The made up rules just hilarious. I presume that bone collector Dermot Gallagher is now explaining the rules, whilst the agent provocateurs demonstrate how it is never applied like that. Ends with Our Dermot saying it's still a rule. Insightful stuff really. Well worth watching.
The VAR team and assistants were also no better. If that happened against Marinakis all hell would break loose. Maybe he's onto something?

Apropos the penalty, Dermot Gallagher has explained the reason for the decision :

"The law was changed in August 2024. It was felt that if a player stops the ball accidentally with his hand from going in the goal, it isn't about handball, it's about stopping a goal. That's the difference, it's a different part of the law.

"When you look at this incident from behind the goal, it is quite clear it is going in the goal. There is no doubt whatsoever it's going to be a goal. The goalkeeper is out."

I don't really give a f*** what he says. The guy's an apologist t***.

Did he mention the ball coming off Canvot's body onto his hand? That's been his go to reason for penalties not being given all season.
What did he have to say about the stamp or anything else Chelsea did?
These are the comments of erstwhile referee Keith Hackett :

“If the authorities decided they wanted to apply a sanction, even though there’s VAR, if the officials state they haven’t seen it, the FA can take it forward, and a panel will review it.

“You cannot let an incident like that go unpunished. For me, it was, at the very minimum, reckless, and therefore, he should have received a yellow card. It was more of a horse-kick, rather than a stamp, so it’s reckless for me.”

OK but what did Gallagher say about it?

I am unaware that he was actually asked his opinion on this incident.
Keith Hackett thought a Yellow should have been brandished and perhaps VAR formed the same conclusion but cannot intervene in such circumstances.
No, he wasn't asked because the lack of action on those incidents was clearly indefensible which would undermine his constant refrain that the referee was right.

My opinion on the penalty. I always look at these things as what if it happened the other way round, i.e. if a Chelsea player accidentally handballed a goal bound shot from us. Would we have wanted a penalty? Of course we would. Would it also have been fair to give a yellow card for that too? No way.

The decision has caused controversy and split opinions.
In the final analysis we did not get defeated on account of this incident.
