Worst Ref

Oh look Willo.

In November, Newcastle's Harvey Barnes was defending a corner and stood on the goalline. The delivery curled into the goal area and hit Barnes on the arm, which was alongside his body. There was no VAR intervention for a penalty, which the KMI panel supported 5-0

Another point which no-one has mentioned - in the first half Palace were given a free kick and the Chelsea player who had committed the foul (can't remember who) picked up the ball and walked away five yards or so with it before throwing it away. Surely that is a standard yellow card offence yet nothing was given.

Yup, England did nothing. He's a cheat.

Yep, I did mention it in the match thread ,it happened on a couple of occasions and looked like team instructions when the ball was dead or out of play to delay the match restarting . The most obvious was when the ball went out for a goal kick , the Palace defender went to get the ball down by the corner flag and the Chelsea player picked up a spare ball took it into the penalty area and dropped it . Ended up with two balls on the pitch and a delay in the restart .
They were all at it .

England’s stats show a clear anti-London bias and Palace in particular. I have compared his record using the points per game of the six London clubs and six best clubs from the northern half of the Country excluding Arsenal and Man City, two teams he clearly sucks up to. The average is 1.53 for the North and 1.12 for the London teams. This indicates a gain for the north of nearly half a point (0.46) a game if you include the Arse and City. The points for Palace average 0.64 per game and this drags down the London score.

I could have included Brighton in the review but their figures come out as similar to the North at 1.54. Hence the anti-London bias.

There is total confusion about the penalty award with different former refs giving different opinions about the situation. As an ex ref myself I find it incredible that the law is unclear about what should happen in this situation. IFAB really need to sort this out as it brings the laws of the game into disrepute and puts unnecessary pressure on refs/vars.
Just insert the truth. If it's against a big team it may be given. If it's done by a big team, it won't be given.

Interesting comment by Martin Samuel in today's Times discussing the rookie Ref in the City v. Wolves match who was instructed by Darren England (VAR) to check a possible penalty. Sent to the screen but decided to stick to his original decision of 'no penalty' and received praise for doing so and not being intimidated by the action of a supposedly superior referee.

He contrasted that with England's perfomance at the Chelsea game in deciding to accept the VAR and giving a penalty for Canvot's alleged 'handball' which, Samuel said, was a travesty of a decision that had no logic. He'd amusingly mentioned that England had been messing up decisions for years.

So perhaps the many comments on the match thread that we were hard done by have more than an element of truth ....
