World cup 2026

Egypt robbed.

If the fantastic Egypt goal is disallowed by bringing the play back the length of the field then the same should apply to Argentine's winner.

Clearly a foul on Salah and then a push by McAllister too.

👎
Respectfully disagree. Salah is a diver. Watch either action in real time and neither Egyptian player is prevented from advancing, they just throw themselves to the floor in the hope of an ultra-soft VAR penalty.

Perhaps if they had stayed upright and tried to fight for lost possession, the same instinct would have spread to their teammates and they wouldn't have let the goal in.

Plus, whilst I hate VAR and dislike it overturning the Egypt goal, that was at least just a disallowed goal. What Egypt wanted was not just to have the Argie goal ruled out, but also to get a knockout penalty of their own for next to f*** all.

They played very well and I can understand why they are so gutted, but I'm glad they didn't get to win a game that way.

Can't see either of Columbia or the Swiss beating Argentina in the QFs. It's all set up for an Argentina vs england Semi.

Best performance in this game is the referee, considering how physical it’s been, he’s kept control well and he could’ve been sucked into giving soft penalties two or three times

For the organisers financially, FIFA and now politically losing Messi and Argentina at this stage was too damaging to their interests.

The most obvious thing is that people feel if the situation was reversed then Argentina would not have have been overruled, there would have been VAR checking and found in their favour.

BBC Sport website poll so far 72% think Egypt were robbed.

😎

Anyone noticed that FIFA has officially announced the full officiating crew for France v Morocco. The entire team is Argentinian, which is the first time all officials have been picked from one country.

The officials for last nights match ARGEYG were all French(except 4th official), favour done, favour returned.
That just doesn't sit well with me. Surely officials should not be from who you are likely to meet next? Some of the stuff at this World Cup is barely hidden. They need to hide stuff better than this. At least 'say' the officials are from somewhere else more neutral than that.

I think Egypt chucked it, as Senegal did.

They need to learn how to play out games better.
Argentina went up 3 gears in that last 10 minutes. They were terrible for most of the game, and Egypt picked them off incredibly, but that last 10 minutes they were fast, incisive and clinical.
At 80 mins, Egypt must've thought they had it won and just to keep doing the same but were hit totally unaware by Argentina's will to win.

I can’t believe VAR should be going back to a foul 20 seconds before right up the other end of the pitch to disallow a goal as in Egypt against Argentina. If it’s that far away in distance from the goal and time covered and the ref doesn’t give it, tough, because Egypt still had a massive amount of work to do to score what was a great goal

It reminds me of the rugby where sometimes they go back however long they need to in order not to award a try. Although they're not supposed to. Other tries aren't looked into at all. It's highly selective. And I half agree with Egypt's narrative while also half not particularly caring. I can't even pretend to like Argentina at all. Although Messi seems fine, can't say I know too much about him as a person. He seems quieter than Ronaldo.

We have four yellows I think, this is not helpful.

Yellow cards could determine outcomes Michael is on a yellow for something innocuous yet it could bar him.

With all the other problems at Epstein-FIFA refs and VAR it is looking like you need a miracle just to get through unscathed.

At the risk of excommunication I think Spain look very good technically.

Former Liverpool man Quansah will miss Saturday's quarter-final with Norway (22:00 BST) and a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland.

Quansah, 23, will be available if England reach the final in New Jersey on 19 July.

The Football Association was considering whether to appeal, but under the tournament regulations there is no avenue to contest the ban.

Strange. I thought if you were the US president, anything could happen. 😱 :football:
