What’s a defunct shop or brand you miss the most?

Maynards - worked in the Penge branch as a Saturday girl at 15.

Slab toffee of all flavours that you smashed up with a hammer before weighing it out, Parma violet cachous in an exotic shaped jar, and boxes of Milk Tray with 'velvet' bases and huge satin bows for those special occasions.......

Oh! and 10 Woodbines and a quarter of mint humbugs to be delivered to Alf in Arpley Road on Saturday afternoons before the racing started*.

*on the radio of course

what was his method of payment or was this just one of several favours you performed in the neighbourhood?

anything made by Huntley and Palmer's

and Colman's used to do French, German and American mustard as as well as English. You can get the equivalent of German or American quite easily but the French is hard to come by and a dollop of that does wonders for an onion gravy or a Lancashire Hotpot.

Cash on delivery of course - debit cards didn't exist and I'm not sure if credit cards did either.

There was a chain of butchers down here in Kent called J.C.Rook & Sons that did it's own sausages, pies, pasties etc.

They went pop a couple years ago.

I used to love their Cornish pasties and Gala pie. They always seemed quite busy whenever I went into one of their shops.

Such a shame as they employed a couple of hundred people too.
The one in the chequers did a great chilli beef baguette with cheese.

In bygone days I used to frequent 'Record Rendezvous' in London Road, Norbury.
There were a couple of enclosed booths for sampling the sounds before deciding whether to make a purchase. All Vinyls in those days !

When you refer to Colman's French mustard, was that the rather pleasant dark brown stuff (that went amazingly with cheese on toast)? I think Colman's discontinued it some time ago but the good news is that Waitrose do their own brand French mustard which, as far as I can tell, is exactly the same. Delicious.

French mustard was one of the attractions of Wimpy bars.

Apropos 'Wimpy' I recall sampling a 'Bender' on a few occasions back in the day.
On one such occasion I was devouring one and a temulent chap near me proceeded to leave vomitus on the floor. I was NOT best pleased and made my displeasure forcibly known.

Wilkinson's was a well stocked shop but who knew they provided fiancés as well?
An HMV opened near me quite recently and made me feel very old when I went in and hardly recognised, anything they were selling. Seemed to be mostly related to computer gaming merchandise.

I did join when it was called Wilkinson but changing it to Wilko was part of the rebranding.
When the neice, Lisa Wilkinson, took over the company she ran it into the ground with rubbish decision making. The Range have bought the name and they either stock some of the brand in their stores or have opened new Wilko stores along the south coast so there is hope that they may start re opening on a much wider scale again.

Willo, I'm not easily shocked but this has shaken me to the core.

Oh. hang on. This isn't the phrases you don't hear any more thread.

As you were....

Cobbs department store in Sydenham - is the junction still called Cobbs corner?

Defunct brand - can we include Charlton Ath in this category??
