War in Ukraine

The last time Britain got involved in Crimean conflict, it produced another magnificent historical military victory. I give you, Charge of the Light Brigade.
However, with our current leaders, I think it likely we call fall below that benchmark quite easily.

Poor old Captain Nolan got the blame....partly deserved....realised his mistake too late and tried to change course by accounts but was killed before he could do so.

It's a good example of how fecking stupid elites can be.....and especially how accountability can be avoided via omissions and half truths and narrative control.

A little known part of the story is that we reached the guns and killed an estimated fifty gunners with most of the others running off...but the Russian heavy cavarly came in and we were off....what could get away anyway....lost about 60 percent of the brigade and a higher percent of the horses. The brigade couldn't operate after that.

Apparently the charge rattled the Russians and made them more cautious, which helped us win Balaclava......Nevertheless it was a recognised disaster.

For Europe and the US....like Benz says....it's all the money they have invested into Ukraine....and I'm not talking war money....the whole thing is corrupt as sh1t and they are no better than the Russians.

I wonder if Hitler were allowed to dominate Europe and beyond, what the American response would have been eventually, with or without Japan bombing Pearl Harbour or some other attack. Would there have eventually been an atomic attack on Germany and Europe and an atomic war? Under 10 years ago the theoretical question asked was if you could travel back in time, would you kill Hitler? Issue with that is there could have been something worse later on with the atomic bomb or nuclear. But maybe that’s nonsense, I don’t know. And what would have risen in Germany without Hitler? Communism?
Sounds like the plot to Command & Conquer: Red Alert...

Command & Conquer: Red Alert takes place in a parallel universe. At the Trinity Site in New Mexico in 1946, Albert Einstein prepares to travel back in time. He activates his experimental time machine to find himself in Landsberg, Germany, on December 20, 1924, where he meets Adolf Hitler just after the latter's release from Landsberg Prison. Following a brief conversation between the two, Einstein shakes Hitler's hand, which erases him from the timeline.
Hitler's death prevents him from rising to power as leader of Nazi Germany, effectively creating a new timeline. Without Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union (USSR) grows powerful under the rule of Joseph Stalin. The USSR seizes land from China and then invades Eastern Europe, to achieve Joseph Stalin's vision of a Soviet Union stretching across the entire Eurasian landmass. In response, the countries of Western Europe (including an already-rearmed Germany) form the Allied Nations and start a war against the invading Soviet Army. Over the course of the game's story, the Allies and Soviets fight for control over the European mainland in an alternate World War II:

He wanted us as a client state.

Everyone wants us as a fecking client state.

That means a lot of things. Could be like we used Ireland in 1914, could be thoroughly passive. He certainly thought Italy would be a bit better than they were. He didn't get much from Franco after helping him did he?

The Germans took a beasting attacking Sevastopol too. Never took it.

Precisely.

If you're actually right wing you get the progressives connecting you to Hitler all the time. As if he's the poster boy for being on the right.

Franco also fought communism but without this weird obsession with Jews....he beat the commies as well and stayed out of the war to boot.

Worth watching, it's well made

This has made me think about watching it again

Whether this is the right place to put this I am not sure but in the US thread a few weeks ago the subject of Trump’s involvement with Russia came up again with some parroting Trump’s claims of it all being a “witch hunt” and that Mueller “exonerated” him, with me providing a link to an investigation that proved he didn’t.

With Trump now increasingly following Putin’s line on why the war exists and what must happen to end it, even temporarily, it’s worth reviewing whether there really is something behind this.

C4 Dispatches produced a well researched and informative documentary on this about a month ago. With what’s now happening it’s worth a look:-

So trump wasn’t responsible for getting the leaders to actually consider peace then?
Yup TDS is real 😳😀

Franco was very lucky. He started out as a Hitler/Mussolini/Vichy type. Got a ton of fascist help (& funding) to win the Spanish Civil War. He avoided WWII. Then in 1946 the Cold War started, and the US were happy to prop-up any non-commie regime in Europe.
Died of old age in 1975.

During their stay at the White House, Trump offered a tour to the foreign leaders

In one of the photos, he is seen showing Zelenskyy and Macron his collection of MAGA hats.....They must have been cringing inside as they have to smile while obviously so disliking him....I just find it so low key amusing. If only Wisbech could get that tour.

Of course he hasn’t.

Trump has been, and is being played by Putin. The only real question is why. If Trump had really wanted to get the leaders to consider peace he would have dealt much harder blows to the Russian economy than he has, given unequivocal support to NATO and supported Ukraine with more effective air defence. That would have produced an earlier and less costly settlement than the one likely to be forced on Ukraine now. Instead of getting tougher with Putin when he became President again he waved the white flag and encouraged him.

The whole thing has been badly managed for decades by the USA but to suggest Trump is responsible for peace is nonsense. He might be at the table when Putin pretends, again, to sign a deal but that’s not the same at all.

The ironic thing being that most of them were probably made in China so now cost 2.5 times what they did a year ago.

Just more bad analysis from you.

You have been awful on this war since the start.

When peace was offered up in 2022 you backed Biden and Johnson in their successful bid to stop Zelensky from signing.

Now the deal will be far worse and you seem to think it could be better.

It's as dim as thinking that big sanctions onto India and China for taking shadow fleet oil are going to have good consequences for the world economy and for US influence in important spheres.....The thought that there are reasons why this isn't done...and hasn't been done....doesn't seem to occur to you.

By rights you should be paying about thirty percent of every right winger's energy bill.....because it's your ideas which are responsible for it.

that wouldn't even bother me - we had Leo Varadkar here and his underpants was the least shocking part of his tenure. For Macron, Its the vintage that i find a bit shocking. Akin to something on the Antiques Roadshow.

These degenerates need kicking out of power, if France was properly democratic the right would already have far more.

I just don't understand some people especially the media. Whatever you think of Putin he has successfully seized land, albeit at a high cost to his troops. Winning countries tend not to give land back so unless the EU are going full on to back the Ukraine with troops etc. any deal is going to favour Russia.

The Ukraine are not going to get a good deal it might stink but it's the real world (might is right) not the happy clappy alphabet soup win the EU and Starmer think it should be.
