Trump is doing something that no UK leader did.....he's insisting that American companies operate in America's interest first.....which back in the day was just assumed but now very much isn't the case.

But Trump is making them do so.

We on the other hand just sold the family silver to the higher bidder instead of protecting our famous companies.....Now pretty much what everyone thinks is British isn't actually British....like Rolls Royce....which is owned by BMW.

What is in America’s interest is, and always will be, a matter of opinion.

Trump is certainly operating in what is in some Americans interest. Primarily the very rich, himself included. Whether the poor or ultimately the long term security of the country and its place in the world, is another debate.

The world has changed. You either accept that and adapt, or you try to isolate yourself from it, whilst using your residual economic muscle to your temporary advantage.

Trump’s approach is naive and simplistic. He won’t be around to see the consequences but history is very unlikely to regard his time as a period of wise governance.

Maybe it might see his awful approval ratings amongst most Americans improve then.

There is some debate as to what is actually ‘in America’s interest’ if it means making goods more expensive but I don’t necessarily disagree with the sentiment of the above.

One thing I do find quite amusing though is how much the MAGA right wing are quite happy for this level of government interference in markets and private enterprises. Traditional conservatives are supposed to believe in free markets and as little government interference as possible.

All valid observations.

At the end of the day while everyone has ideology to some extent if the end result doesn't actually end up improving outcomes via some measurable and objective metric then it deserves to be questioned the same as anything else.

If Trump's form of economic protectionism is good for America it also means it's worse for others.....Trump is essentially bullying rather than working with allies and while I tend to see how aspects of his tariffs will work....I also see the negatives, less choice but also perhaps the longer term damage of removing the master/client relationship that has existed between the US and Europe since WW2.

I could go off on one of my rants about how WW2 destroyed the British empire and thus our influence in the world and replaced it with the Americans but that's for another time.

I agree with Trump that some trading situations were taking advantage of the US and it's good for the US that he's addressed that but personally I think he's also gone off the deep end with some of his 'analysis' and is essentially bullying some states with unfair deals.

Too much of that damages America's relationships and thus influence.....might is right does work in the military sense but less so economically and it works against you diplomatically.

I especially agree with his bullying of American companies (Apple, Nvidea) though as President he really does have to trim this 'internationalist, earn as much as possible' aspect and ensure that American companies understand their responsibility to their home economy as much as possible.....otherwise they are killing the golden goose.

He has well and truly made his point winning the election. He is doing all the deals now and making the hard decisions that have to be made.

I'd say after the world cup next year Vance will get a go and heal the "fractured" Maga base.
