US Politics

He represents the Country and is responsible for the Federal branch of government.

The people themselves are represented by (guess who) the Representatives in the House of Representatives, and the Senators in the Senate.
See what misled me was this line

The President is the highest representative of the people of our nation.

Agreed.

Most countries separate the ceremonial from the political, so Ireland has a President, which fulfils the role of our King, but the real power is the Prime Minster.

The US is unique in that the President fulfils both roles. So he is most certainly the representative of the nation both politically and ceremonially.

As regards Congress, individually they do not represent the nation, but the area that elected them. We would not say that Diane Abbott represented the wishes of the UK. Collectively Parliament and Congress can argue they do but Parliament has a stronger case as we do not elect the King whereas the Americans elect their President nationally.

This is all true, and in line with everything I was trying to point out. It’s a different system there in which the role of the President is more an amalgam of our King, as head of state, and Prime Minister, neither of whom represent the people individually. That’s the job of our MPs. They represent the country. Us, collectively.

The BBC must be using different legal experts - they think he's going to court.

The opinions I have heard suggest that Comey’s lawyers should be able to have the case dismissed before it comes to trial. Trump may even prefer that because the case is so weak that not one lawyer in the Justice Department was, according to reports, prepared to present it. Hence the use of Trump’s completely inexperienced lackey. Trump may prefer to opportunity to rant about corrupt Judges than face being humiliated by a jury. Comey though might not.

We will see.

I watched, as I am sure many did, the Ryder Cup over the weekend with its tense and ultimately joyful conclusion.

It struck me this morning that the calm and dignified way the European players handled the pressure and intimidation from a hostile crowd might have been them sending, perhaps unintentionally, a message to the Americans that went beyond sport.

Faced with a hostile, bullying atmosphere look at how they responded. They didn’t provoke or raise the temperature. They wore muted clothing and made no pointed remarks. They turned the other cheek and allowed their skill and determination do all the talking. Their dignity quietened the crowd because it gave them nothing to feed off.

They waited until after the event to let out the emotions and tease Trump.

Perhaps not just a message to Americans but to us too. Look how we do when acting together as a united European team!

As opposed to the disunited bunch of countries who spent most of the last millennium at war with each other.
