I watched, as I am sure many did, the Ryder Cup over the weekend with its tense and ultimately joyful conclusion.
It struck me this morning that the calm and dignified way the European players handled the pressure and intimidation from a hostile crowd might have been them sending, perhaps unintentionally, a message to the Americans that went beyond sport.
Faced with a hostile, bullying atmosphere look at how they responded. They didn’t provoke or raise the temperature. They wore muted clothing and made no pointed remarks. They turned the other cheek and allowed their skill and determination do all the talking. Their dignity quietened the crowd because it gave them nothing to feed off.
They waited until after the event to let out the emotions and tease Trump.
Perhaps not just a message to Americans but to us too. Look how we do when acting together as a united European team!
