US Politics

I trust our own government, along with others in Europe and the rest of the western world minus the increasingly loony USA won’t be deflected from their path to get control of misinformation and disinformation on the internet by insisting on effective moderation by all platforms. Comply or be blocked must be the message.

Free exchange of ideas is a a precious commodity which must be protected.

It must not though be confused with allowing the unrestricted circulation of blatant lies and incitement by malign sources who wish to see our countries disrupted and ultimately destroyed.

We face having to do this for the next 4 years without the USA but it must still be done.

Trump has excelled himself today with yet another appalling announcement. He has suspended all new foreign aid and cancelled current projects. This will cause chaos in parts of the world where help is vital. People will die as a result. Now aid will only be given if it can be seen to deliver a direct benefit to the USA.

This is not leadership. It’s selfishness on fire. The UK cannot detach from the USA but it really must find a way of showing its distaste.
The left have had full control of the media for years and years and spread so much s***. Allowing people to die and go to jail on the back of it. It seems ok for them but not for the right. If they didn’t have double standards they would have none!
Oh and you are free to not read it so you have a choice.

Wisbech Eagle

You’re hated of Trump is well known. You look to criticise and smear at any opportunity. I understand that’s your right but you never criticised or interrogated Biden in any material way? You have no fairness or balance man and you should be ashamed. I look for the truth. I don’t always get it right but at least I don’t preach one way tribal politics.
Oh dear, are you ready 😂

Really?? You must be the only one?

Are you serious?

You think the Mail, Sun, Express, Telegraph etc are left leaning?

I know the right think the BBC is, but the left thinks it leans right! I think it stays objective.

So do the other broadcasters, with the exception of GBNews who are unapologetically right wing and proud of it.

Your bias is dominating your reasoning.

I re-read it this morning and thought it was a little personal so deleted it without seeing your response. Probably just the naughty red wine talking. Cheers. 😄
I won’t respond in full to a post deleted because of second thoughts but rest assured I don’t hate Trump! I try not to hate anyone. I feel sorry for him as he very obviously has a personality disorder of some kind. I hate the politics he is using and the way he is being manipulated.

The media isn’t only our news papers.
You clearly meant the bigger players and twatter FB and the like were all left leaning and shut down anything they thought wasn’t left. Now they don’t do that you are against them. Stop conflating with our rags because they are a tiny % of the media.

Twitter and FB were never left! They just didn’t used to tolerate those posting disinformation, misinformation or conspiracy theories. Especially that which originated in hostile countries.

Then look at Gab and Telegram and try to tell me they are left leaning!

Now X has decided to abandon fact checking because of Musk and Meta has followed suit to try to stay onside with Trump, replacing it with “community notes”. Effectively asking users to do the moderation.

Which theoretically could be a good thing, being faster. The trouble is that only about 10% of the notes are likely to actually get posted or there will be more notes than posts. The rest being screened out by algorithms.

There’s the rub! Who controls the algorithm controls the notes. On X that’s obviously Musk so what way is that going to go? On Meta it’s not yet known but if the way Zuckerberg has been behaving is any guide I don’t think we can expect anything too much.

The right dominates the media. Don’t delude yourself.

Maybe just reflecting public opinion in general.

Seems like Trump is happy to play hardball. Biden often forgot to use the USA's "Big Stick" policy 😀

Seems to have worked ( not here)
In massaging the prejudices of the Trump base and all who have been encouraged to believe that immigration is at the root of all their perceived difficulties, yes.

In building trust and a reputation for compassion and fair dealing with other countries, no.

This is short term populism on heat. It’s not long term strategic planning designed to build partnerships with developing countries.

Expect a surge in Chinese “investment “ in several South American countries as a consequence.

Nobody likes bullies. They sometimes have no choice other than to temporarily bend to their will but will immediately think of ways to cut ties.

Trump's approval rating in the US is soaring.

Too bloody right. We need to do the same, those countries refusing to take back their own people need a firm lesson, stop issuing visas, suspend foreign aid and yes tariffs if appropriate.
What countries would they be?

It’s comparatively rare for a country to openly refuse to take back its own citizens. Iran being the only one I am aware of, and they are already sanctioned.

Most times it’s bureaucracy and obstruction that stymies returns and that is much more difficult when trying to balance all the competing considerations involving trade and security.

Trump style bullying might play well with populists but when cool heads try to determine what path leads to the best outcome a more nuanced approach is needed.
