US Politics

Venezuelan oil is of poor quality so will not make the same money as sweeter crudes.
China has no problem degumming oil plus crude is still used in a million different things, Carbon fibre being one I can think of off the top of my head.

The Venezuelan spigot to China is likely to be turned off anyhow.

To early to see how this will play out. The usual suspects are already condemning Trump but if this leads to a democratic Venezuelan government then he will have done a good thing.

The left want María Corina Machado to lead the country as she appeared to have won the election. If she does come to power that will be thanks to Trump, a bitter pill for the TDS to swallow.

Of course it may just lead to yet another tyrant taking over. But Trump has been quick to limit the US action to arresting Maduro so he has already claimed victory.

Very predictably the rest of the continent has condemned the US action (National past time in Central and South America) but that is to be expected, I doubt many of the countries are really that upset.

Sky news interviewed some guy from the States. There are apparently 3 million Venezuelans in Colombia that's putting strain on their systems. A stable neighbour could afford a release of pressure on the Colombian regime if most of those went back.

Exactly. The Latin countries are obliged to condemn Trump because of the optics but many of them will be quite happy.

While one part of me thinks that it's outrageous that you can just fly in and kipnap a country's leader, another part of me kind of likes what it says about reality in the world....Similar to Ukraine.

It's based and a balls out execution of power onto a regime that talked tough but had no Cuban cigar. Will what they did give them the result they want in Venezuela? I doubt it....but it's fecking based all the same.

Zero sympathy for Maduro of course....He's just a symbol of the politics of South America and in a sense the unspoken danger of America's demographic future.

Something that hugely irritated me twenty years ago was having to listen to twaats like Nick Clegg and assorted other wallies and half truth purveyors go on and on about 'international law'.....presenting a picture to the public that was always a lie and never honest.

That fecking annoys me about politics....the bare faced lying.....the presentation of a distorted picture, when you know it's not honest. It happens on both sides, but because the left present themselves as more moral it fecking annoys me ever more.....the biggest lies on the planet have been from the left.

International law never was 'international'. It's only applied onto weak nations as powerful nations can ignore it and do what they want because no over-arching jurisdiction has power to apply judgement on them. So criminal courts only work on their enemies.....Victor's justice....the kind that only looks at one side and pretends horrors on the other were always justified.

There is no justice in war: only winners and losers. In a brutal way it's far more truthful than the bullshit you have to hear by bureaucrats and other system apparatchiks selling you warm words to engineer continued trust in the system.

The only people who actually care or believe it still exists, are the smooth brained among us who nod along to authority or western establishment leftists/liberals and of course international lawyers....the latter being because they are making bank over this half truth.

Rant over.

It's an alpha move, the sheer brass neck & confidence to pull it off is something you can't help but admire.
Britain used to be able to pull off similar feats see Operation Chariot.
Jeremy Clarkson narrated a brilliant documentary on It.

Whilst the heroism is undeniable I would take issue with Clarkson over this raid not being widely known by the public, youngsters perhaps. There have been at least 2 movies based on it plus several books, so not as unknown as he would like us to believe.

'The Gift Horse'.

1952 starred Trevor Howard a popular war movie portraying the raid on St.Nazaire with the ramming of the dock gate by a tub loaned under lend-lease.

I have seen it loads of times.
