US Politics

While I would support Trump general idea of bringing manufacturing back to the US due to the fact that they are capable of much production themselves. I think there is valid criticism to be found in the rather blunt force nature in which these tariffs have been designed....with no nuance for particular situations.

I listen to Patrick Boyle, who's a Youtube financial commentator.....in the centre I'd say.....who speaks about these topics without the dramatic emotionalism frequently found on the mainstream left. He certainly isn't much of a fan of these tariffs and it's worth listening to as it isn't the usual swiveled eyed lefty.

Definitely before his term ends, as I'm very certain to win. However, that is too far off from remembering to ask you for my winnings! How about this time next year?

Let’s see how quickly he u-turns (or not). I can see him backing down in a lot of cases (or saying he’s negotiated ‘great deals’) just to calm investors’ fears and stave off inflation/recession.

If there’s been no backing down by the end of the month you’re on 🙂

Exactly this! Come and join me over here big boy 🙂

Sounds more like someone with TDS having a rant to me. It is a bias opinion piece not factual. It may capture some sentiment that may exist among some British people but not all.
It just isn’t. It’s an objective analysis expressed in an entertaining way.

The very fact that you fail to see that confirms one of the central points it makes.

As I've said before economics isn't really my bag but I think Boyle's video appears cogent and balanced....and all done in his amusingly dry manner. Trump's intention is correct...and Biden was also trying the same thing but preferred subsidies as his route.

Boyle criticises Trump's implementation and thinks some of the reasoning appears flawed.

I think the video explains a balanced view on this.....I'd probably agree with 80 percent of it.

What facts do you not believe are verifiable? You have only to listen to him to verify them. No one else needs to be involved.

Like I said, it is an opinion piece by someone with TDS. Take the claim that most Brits don’t like Trump there’s no solid data here to back that up, so it’s more his take than a verified fact.

With automated production lines?

Yep. $3,500 is the estimated sale price of a US only made iPhone.

Global supply chains are in place for a reason - being able to keep the price down by making various different parts in different parts of the world where the raw materials and labour are cheaper make a huge, huge difference to many industries, especially tech and engineering.

With all the best will in the world you can’t just onshore the manufacturing of many goods without making the production cost multiply many times.

This sounds like the Milton Friedman pencil example on supply lines: it is of course true.

However, apparently the tariffs do have plenty of exemptions on those type of goods for products that they can't produce themselves.

My own take is probably less extreme than Trump's and more related to the fact that I think nations do need a small amount of protectionism....or subsidies otherwise you won't have a farm, steel, weapons, computing and so on industry.....Your workforce won't have the technical skills required to run, maintain and feed the country if there's an external shock to the country....a blockade, large war or whatever.

However, what Trump is doing obviously extends far beyond that.....Many think it's still a negotiating tactic. Only time will tell.

We don’t do many opinion polls on US Presidents but this piece indicates how things stood a couple of weeks ago. Even you couldn’t argue that last week’s events would increase his popularity here:-

The guy that wrote that piece no more has a non existent syndrome than anyone else. He has opinions that resonate with most people in the UK and around the world. Including the USA itself. That’s an awful lot of people with an imaginary syndrome.

Again... there is no hard data in there that proves most Brits hate Trump. It's just a poll saying more people don’t like him than do.

It's still one guys biased TDS opinion of Trump and not facts.

Your first assertion was that there was no evidence that Brits don’t like Trump. Not that they hate him. I provided pretty clear evidence of that, which isn’t actually needed. You only need to talk to others and you can easily reach that conclusion yourself. It’s self evident.
