Tyrick Mitchell

My 7 year old's favourite is now Mitchell.

Mateta was his first favourite Palace player, followed by Sarr after Mateta's antics in January. He was really down and disappointed after Sarr's sulk this transfer window. Hope Mitchell doesn't let him down, he seems a much better role model!
Exactly this. When my son pointed out Mitchell I said "that's a very good choice" for exactly this reason.

He's picked a good 'un. He's this generation's Terry Long or Jimmy Cannon and in 50 years time your son will be telling others what a great player he was.

Class again today as always.

I do wonder though if he’s arrogant or shy, because he’s always pretty reserved when the fans are chanting him! Maybe I should cut him some slack….

Maybe it’s because I played (at an extremely low level) as a full back but they’ve always been among my very favourite Palace players - Dean Gordon, Marc Edworthy, Danny Butterfield, Joel Ward… Ty is up there as one of my favourites ever. I’d love him to remain our first choice left back/LWB for another five years (and squad player beyond that).

We've had a few. AWB, Souare, Hinshelwood and the great Kenny Samsom.

I keep on seeing Souare on these lists. I don't want to be too harsh but he was ok for a little while. He wasn't exactly brilliant - not deserving of the same sentence with some of the others. He was average Championship level. I think his stupid accident makes him more romantic somehow. I thought the guy was a prat for that.

Let’s hope Herman the German was suitably impressed sitting in the stand…….but I doubt it, sometimes your face just doesn’t fit 🤨

My view is that Mitchell's England problem is that for 95% of England games you don't have to be a very good defender as England qualify so easily and mostly face a low block so there isn't much defending to be done. Attacking ability is more valued for the left back to make the extra player to defeat the defences sitting in.

The issue then comes in the tournaments and you play the top international teams at the top of their game. Then you need a defender. And there isn't one in the squad or they haven't been given enough games to have the necessary experience. Look at the disaster on the left of the defence against Argentina with Messi given free reign.

Up until now Mitchell has not had the consistency of quality crossing or finishing. Maybe those goals yesterday and the reality of him becoming one of the senior players at the club will help. Chilwell may help too so Tyrick gets some rest and maybe some competition for the starting line up will drive his attacking standards up.

He really is a credit to the club.
