this has aged well. Trump has now done two 180 turns on this and is back to where he was when the deal was originally announced - he likes it.

The fact he is all over the place is the most damaging aspect surely, whereas this has minimal impact on Starmer.

If we go back to the deal. The UK gets a hundred year lease of the base but has to pay for it. The UK has to take any migrants but were trying to put that on St Helena. But I see there are already loads of Chagossians in the UK and presume they claim they are fleeing Mauritian mis treatment. I see this deal as adding to migration and to costs. I don't see it as good for the UK or for the people of the Chagos Islands. I'm also not sure if Britain is even going to bother with the base, yet pay for it and let the US have it. Which is why Trump isn't complaining from a US angle. They'll have to pay to run the base but the UK will be paying the rent. I can't remember the cost. 14 billion or something like that.

I can see that it meets what has been decided by some kind of international court but I'm not particularly convinced there's much reason to follow the verdict. I don't see them as ever finding for Britain against an African country.

If people think this is a good deal for Britain I have seen arguments for it. But I don't think it's a good deal.
