this is such an overused and lazy stat.
UK population is c70m, the world's population is c8bn - so less than 1% (0.875% in fact).
Clearly as we are such a small country in the grand scheme of things our emissions will always be limited.
However, we are also one of the richest countries in the world, are an island which has natural benefits and need to reduce our reliance on importing gas and oil from aboard (as Russia and now Iran wars have highlighted).
If we want lower utility bills, then we need to be producing more energy ourselves and via the cheapest routes. I know transporting the electricity around the country is still an issue but solar and wind are clearly cheaper and cleaner.
IMHO the drilling in the North Sea debate is misguided. As far as i'm aware all current oil fields can continue extracting as much oil as they can, however, this is then sold at global oil prices so the impact on the price we pay is minimal. Any new oil field will take years to produce and so will also have minimal impact. Furthermore, producing oil offshore is so much more expensive than on shore (c£30 per barrel v £3) that it is not as cost effective as people think.
Alternatively we can just ignore the problem and kick the can down the road for the next generation to sort out.
