I watched a PBS documentary about New York it covered about 100 years. What surprised me (not really) was how many idiot mayors they elected over that time. There were a handful of mayors who got to grips with crime and the city's debt but the majority were just bat s*** crazy.

The new incumbent is just the latest of a long line.

If he tries to carry out his promises he will be gone in 4 years.

A very good point. For the best part of 200 years the USA has made it clear that their neighbours had better follow the USA lead or else. To that end they have invaded Mexico, Cuba several times and other countries including Grenada they have also been behind many coups and assassinations.

The west seem to be okay with this policy. Russia of course has a similar view about it's neighbours but we apparently Europe thinks that is not okay.

I'd already stated this is all about oil and gas. Exxon have been allowed in - as have BP but information on how much they are doing is sparse. Likely for several reasons. Embarrassment for Venezuela and the USA no doubt. The UK is involved via Guyana. Which is all being brushed under the carpet whilst we pay billions to get rid of Chaos. There's not much more I can say.

James Monroe the US Foreign Secretary came up with the Monroe doctrine which made it clear that any European interference in the USA and her neighbours would be considered a hostile act.

This I think was in the 1820's when Spain still controlled Cuba, Britain had it's West Indies empire. France then tried and failed to conquer Mexico around the time of the American Civil War which meant that Yanks were too busy to object.

So originally the doctrine was to tell the Europeans to but out of empire building in the Americas. It then morphed into any country we don't like whose our neighbour blah blah.

New York have elected a Democrat Mayor Mamdani who describes himself as "Trump's worst nightmare" a muslim socialist. he has promised legal representation for an immigrant "lifted" by ICE. He was born in Uganda,very suave,34 years of age and was a rapper "Kid Cardamum". I mentioned his birth place as it means that he is not allowed to run for the presidency.

The Democrats need a JFK and he is far from that.

It is always about cash. The Banana Republics were all about reducing the price of cash crops so Americans could have cheap food.

Unintended consequences from yet another foreign policy feck-up by the USA: Unstable, despotic, corrupt governments. Poverty and huge wealth inequality. Leading to...

Mass immigration into the USA and a thriving and brutal drug trade.

I'm not so sure. New York is an outlier to the rest of the USA. Many democrats aren't keen on the guy not because they don't sympathise with his views but because they know that his politics will not go down well with the country as a whole.

It's worth looking at previous NY Mayors many many disasters with only a few good un's.
