The bbc, again.

What a surprise! The usual suspects pile in on a simple mistake and make a range of mountains out of a pimple.

Lineker has explained and apologised. The BBC in their quest for exemplary standards from their employees have issued a reminder that everyone needs to avoid mistakes.

The reaction of the Jewish lobby is ridiculous. It’s perfectly possible to regard anti-semitism with total abhorrence yet also be opposed to zionism. For the record that is also my position.

I am not anti-semitic in anyway but have no time at all for the Netanyahu government and its approach in Gaza. Nor, by the way, for Hamas either.

I bet Lineker relishes the prospect of being able to express his opinions freely without being subjected to this kind of nonsensical reaction.

A simple mistake!, 🤣 Someone of his intelligence didn’t read it or knew the significance of a rat before retweeting, absolute rubbish. I think those that have been arrested for retweeting posts may feel he has been let off lightly. The tweet was offensive, did you have the same opinion of those alleged “right wingers” who retweeted offensive posts? Maybe they just made a mistake

Just an aside on 7/10, the only post from GL was “ super Spurs top of the league” no condemnation of the atrocity. Interesting as he is apparently not anti-semetic

Have you seen it? I cannot as it’s been deleted. He says he didn’t see it and I believe him. For the very fact he is intelligent and would have realised it would be offensive if he had of done.

If had reposted in full knowledge of the symbol then he of course deserves condemnation. Just as anyone else, right or left, does who deliberately reposts offensive material.

He didn't see it even though it was just under the title. OK. Maybe he should pay more attention to what he re-posts.

WE incoming to explain it was just a simple mistake
I haven’t seen either the programme or the interview in which he says he has no regrets.

So it’s difficult to really make a judgement but if my sense of what he is saying is correct it’s more that when a clearer picture had emerged of what happened emerged it became apparent that the initial assessments were incorrect. That’s what can happen when you are giving instant reports from the front line surrounded by the fog of war. Not regretting making such reports is therefore understandable. It’s his job. So long as they correct things as information becomes available they are behaving responsibly.

But what if that available information was suppressed?
That would lead to the thing that needs correcting remaining uncorrected, would it not?
Your words by the way.

Yes I have, a screen shot was shown on a news channel. The rat was very prominent on the front of the post, so no way he missed it. Worth a condemnation now?
Perhaps someone of his intelligence should be more careful what he retweets to his millions of followers? Unless of course he agreed with it and wanted to share his thoughts, now there’s a thought 🤔

Just seen Teddy beat me to it. Please explain how he didn’t see it?

I can see it, but then I am now looking for it. Whether I would have noticed it before it got all this attention I am not so sure. Before it was pointed out I had no idea of the connection and it might well have just passed me by as just another irrelevant feature. It doesn’t look particularly threatening or offensive on its own. It’s the symbolism behind it which is and if that’s unknown then you won’t make a connection.

I am not inside Lineker’s head or aware or how he retweets. Some do so very swiftly without studying the content or its source thoroughly.

For someone like Lineker, in his current position, it would be foolish not to take very great care which is why he probably relishes being freed from those chains.

So yes it should be condemned. He either didn’t take enough care, or noticed and still posted. Neither acceptable. As he has acknowledged.

You haven’t watched inglorious barstards I guess .

He knew enough about Nazis to say that Suella Braverman's language in a speech about tightening Britain’s border controls was ‘not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the ’30s’.
But maybe semiotics isn't his strength.

So what? Hearing something and commenting means you must have listened and formed an opinion. The analogy would only work if something was said that you were capable of hearing but whether you listened is unknown.

The point being that if his understanding of a subject is so limited he shouldn't be broadcasting his opinion. It's not like on here where about 20 people will see it - he has over a million followers.
None of this defence was presented when Danny Baker got sacked for a Tweet.

Shame he didn’t follow his own advice then 😏

That’s another so what?

He does post and soon enough he will be doing so without the burden of BBC impartiality restricting him. You have no need to read, let alone agree but that’s freedom of speech for you!

Bit of a bu*ger when it is by someone you disagree with.

He is of course right isn’t he?

No one is though aware of everything, nor have the time to check every detail. You trust and sometimes that trust is misplaced.

Lineker’s general approach on Gaza shows him to be in line with many, probably most, people in the UK. Including me.
