Team vs Bromley

He’s like a tank, f*cking solid.
Cardines looked decent aswell. Obviously bromley are miles away from the premier league though.
How far away from it are we?

I have some sympathy with Sage.

What sort of pre-season is he going to get with the proper first team squad?

The players he's working with at the moment are largely fringe players who will not be involved with the first team when the season starts.

I'm not sure when the internationals are returning, but he won't have had the opportunity to even meet them yet let alone impart his ideas or assess them.

I note that a behind closed doors friendly has been added v Fulham in a couple of weeks and wonder if this will be the first opportunity for Sage to see them in match action.

Almost certainly. I don't see any back until end of next week at the earliest and even if they did roll up on Monday, they'll still have to go through all the pe-season checks and other fitness palaver so unlikely to feature before the Fulham game.

Basically, don't expect any miracles in Como.

Going by Bright's timeline, we're looking at 8th/9th Aug for Yeremy, Hendo, Mateta, Lacroix, and possibly around 31st July - 1st Aug for the others.

Assuming there is room for a few days margin of error, potentially the main group could be ready for the third Como game, and the last four players would be ready by the Fulham game?

In accordance with my nom de plume I reckon main group for Fulham and the the last four for Freiburg. I reckon they'll all still need a bit of a pre-season to get match fit after a 3 week break

Lacroix?

Can’t see anyone that featured today (apart from Canvot/mitchell) being in the starting 11.
So it doesn’t really matter.
I just look at the fringe players and think, in their shoes I’d be knocking my boll*cks out and making it difficult for the new manager.
Most of them never.
Yes, surely you have to in that scenario. I would too. I actually feel like they did do that against Swindon, but not against Bromley. There is a difference in quality of the opposition, but that isn't the whole picture, a lot less guts were busted out there this afternoon.

By the way, if it wasn't clear, my comment "how far are we" was very much in jest. I know this squad is far removed from the one that will shape up next month... though I hold out some hope for a few of the peripheral names.

Ahh, yes I suppose probably not Lacroix.

Deal is not completed yet though... until the clubs release a statement, and he is seen at Stamford Bridge in a deep blue shirt, we could still be looking at a "Guéhi to Liverpool scenario".

Terribly disappointing result but in some respects meaningless. I remember one season under Coppell when we won 13 pre season friendlies then got relegated!
13 pre season friendlies? Probably knackered the squad for the season ahead!

Maybe he's baulked at the battery of innoculations he needs to spend his time there.

My take is that it'll be 3-4-3 like last time.
1st half = Canvot, Walker-Smith and Adamarola as CDs with Cardines and Benamar as wing backs and Devenny and Hughes in midfield

2nd half = King Jemide and Sosa as CDs with Imray and Mitchell as wing backs and Ozoh and Doucore in midfield.

They all played in those positions last time - I don't see Sage mixing it up this early. Plan B may well come later in pre-season.

This was exactly how they set up 👍🏼

How did Doucoure get on?

He looked to be taking it carefully (understandably). He was very rusty on the whole but showed some neat touches and passes at times. Looked to be struggling with the dry surface, got it caught under his feet a couple of times and then under-hit a ball across the back line which was intercepted and then he clumsily brought the player down whilst trying to recover. Early days but he did not stand out and I am not sure he will return to the required standard.

JRS & Esse both put in performances which will see them out on loan again (or sold) before the window closes. Joel Drakes-Thomas the only bright spark, although he missed an absolute sitter.
