Southampton v Crystal Palace match Thread

In all honesty we all saw that result comming last night 🤣

Positives: we hit 40 points, Franca scored and we did not loose or get any new injuries.

Season is done and dusted in my opinion. Most teams have the flip flops on now.
Odd statement, you think Glasner would accept lack of effort, when we are pushing for Europe and the FA Cup. Southampton showing a lot of fight, they dont want to be the team with least points ever. Who are these teams with flip flops on, could you elaborate.

Of course Glasner will not accept it. And of course other managers won't accept it either. But it happens 🤷🏻‍♂️

Fulham, wolves, west ham, man u, spurs. Bournemouth and brentford have slowed down after great first half's of the season even Brighton to a degree.

It's a harsh reality that at a certain point players get the flip flops on coming to the end of the season. Nothing we or the managers can do about it.

This is normally when we get our end of season purple patch when the teams we play have the flip flops on. Just like the last two seasons.

I will make the excuses.

Poor focus with a lot on the players' minds.

Rumours attaching to almost every outfield player and now the coaching staff.

And Saints had the weekend to rest and prepare. We did look leggy beside them.

But still cr@p.

Those who made a "Lord Mayors Show" prediction were probably spot on.

Annoying given how the teams above us did.

But those saying we have to play better this weekend:

1. Weed will possess the ball more. That suits us.
2. They have had the same prep time as us.
3. Last night we got a moral bosting last minute equalizer. They were beaten at home.
I can only re-iterate that it is going to be a summer of change at the club.

The goal that cost us £26 million 😁
Not yet - just the £15m so far according to The Athletic (and my suspect memory). The lad has just turned 21 so plenty of time for him to prove his worth if he can now keep fit. I expect França to prove to have been a good buy once he's fully up and running and getting regular game time.

Great header by Franca and well done to Lerma for the cross, last night we couldn't pass the ball for toffees with Eze being especially guilty.

Let''s hope they have got the bad game out of their system all ready for Brighton.

Eze was diabolical last night, couldn’t pass for toffee, repeatedly dispossessed, poor in front of goal and one of the worst free kicks you will ever see. He generally looked disinterested throughout the game.
As important as he was against Fulham, he was truly shite last night.

We had a bad game, Mitchell didn’t make one forward pass in the first half and a few others were off it as well. Great header by França for our goal but I think he needs to sort his footwear out as most of the time he was slipping over.

I thought both keepers should have saved the goals. Especially theirs. It was quite close to Henderson and not amazingly powerful. That has to be classed as a goalkeeping error on Hendo’s part.

Lacklustre performance but got the draw. This game reminded us we have a lack of depth at centre back with our injuries and just how much developing Wharton has to do. He’s struggled in the last two games and not coped well with being targeted physically. Hopefully this dissuades anyone from bidding for him in the summer!

i think you are being a little harsh. Firstly in terms of defending surely Lacriox should have stuck to their big striker. Letting Clyne pick him up when he drifted to the left (our right) was always going to lead to issues.

As for the header it was well placed and back across the goalie which always makes it difficult as you have to change direction. I thought Hendo did quite well to get a hand to it, the slight criticism could be that he didn't have strong enough wrists to keep it out.

If he had kept it out it would have been an unbelievable save.

As for our goal i thought it looked slightly easier to save. However, i think the direction, and the bounce helped get it over the line. Again, i wouldn't term it a goalie error, however, one where he will be a little disappointed to concede

they got the bad game out of their system at home to Ipswich, we're on a great run but we were only exceptional away at Fulham in the league and for the last hour at home to Villa - many of our 2-0 away wins were against teams who were badly out of sorts. Villa are motoring and that Ascencio seems an amazing addition. I think we'll need to find some improvement from somewhere, Wharton has been inconsistent though he was imperious v Villa, I'd like to see Esse and Franca involved a bit more, especially when Eze is having one of his off days, we can see how Mitchell has upped his game with the arrival of Chilwell, and if Eze believes his place is not 100% guranteed it could sharpen him up a bit.

This really was not true last year - although people who don't look at the fixtures seem to think so. Most of the teams we faced were playing for something - and I doubt even Villa would have been happy to take a 5-0 pasting. If anything, we were the team with flip-flops on

Aston villa clearly had the flips on during our 5-0 win 😅 they were all hungover from partying during the week securing a top 4 finish. Obviously they weren't happy about it or their fans but it is what it is unfortunately.

Looking at back the games we played end of last season.....west ham, Newcastle, man u, wolves, Fulham and villa all had the flip flops on.

Anyways it's a game of opinions it's okay if you have a differing views to mine.

Interesting take. I had thought several times that teams that were supposedly great were rubbish against us. How we didn't beat Newcastle - they were appalling. So were Villa. I didn't even think that much of Liverpool at Selhurst but they got the job done. I wondered had the overall standard gone down. Ironically, Arsenal are probably the best I've seen against us this season.

I think it was true, West Ham had just been knocked out of Europe and even their own fans were expecting them to mentally down tools against us. As for Villa, they’d just qualified for the champions league the week before and were the most ‘on the beach’ team I think I’ve ever seen last game of a season, it was glaringly obvious, we were good and on a roll, but please don’t tell me that Villa team were giving their all.

We beat them twice if you remember this season ! Maybe they are not actually that good or we are better than we think.

West Ham had a few shocker non-shows under Moyes and one of them was against us, the 1-0 at Liverpool was amazing though they squandered chances, generally we were on a roll getting out of relegation fears while others were tailing off, but that shouldn't detract from some genuinely great performances esp at home to Man U and away at Wolves, and all things considered the 2-0 at home to Newcastle truly reflected how well we were playing. Under Glasner we don't have to play outstandingly well because with our attacking talent and his positive approach we have we can always score, often against the run of play, and a goal can transform a game, like Eze's at Fulham though Lerma fired a pretty tasty warning shot. I think we'll have to mix it up a bit prior to the semi v Villa though, just the possibility of a bit of staleness and predictability creeping in which Villa may exploit.

Take the point and move on, JPM’s effort hits the underside of the bar and goes in, we would have had a totally different game last night and would have most probably have gone on to win it. As it was we still nearly won it in injury time.

We weren’t at out best, but Southampton really made it an ugly game as that is really all they have to offer and let’s be thankful that they are heading back to the Championship which i cannot see them coming back from any time soon!

With Southampton 1-0 up and in anticipation of the play acting and time wasting to come, I timed the ‘ball in play’ for the second half.

It was in play for 24 minutes 15 seconds of the 45.
It was in play for 4 minutes 30 seconds of the 8 minutes time added on.
I'd be OK with a play clock of 25 minutes per half for the ball actually in play - making sure to exclude time where goalkeepers have the ball
