Southampton v Crystal Palace match Thread

A poor goal for us to concede. The Southampton player in acres of space was able to deliver a cross under no pressure, Onuachu had a free header and Henderson was culpable in his effort to prevent the ball from entering the net.
Actually I thought it was a great, all be it free header, and Deano got down really well and nearly pulled off a worldy of a save, imho

Great header by Franca and well done to Lerma for the cross, last night we couldn't pass the ball for toffees with Eze being especially guilty.

Let''s hope they have got the bad game out of their system all ready for Brighton.

Richards was missed there, I thought the goalkeepers too could have saved both the goals.

Saints got a point at the Etihad, gave us a good game at Selhurst Park.

Any game in the PL is tough imo as it should be.

😎

very disappointing performance after Saturday and our away form in general. When teams sit back we do struggle.
Surprised OG didn't tweak the team a bit as Saturday is a big game. Players like Sarr and Mitchell have played a lot of football and looked a bit leggy yesterday. We now have some alternatives on the bench (in certain positions) but OG is clearly reluctant to change a winning side. Esse clearly needs minutes.

Just an observation - expected goals - does anyone understand that? At half time despite a poor performance we did hit the bar and the goalie pull off an excellent save our EG was 0.04. Not sure how this is calculated but it's clearly rubbish - surely should have been over 1.

I thought both keepers should have saved the goals. Especially theirs. It was quite close to Henderson and not amazingly powerful. That has to be classed as a goalkeeping error on Hendo’s part.

Lacklustre performance but got the draw. This game reminded us we have a lack of depth at centre back with our injuries and just how much developing Wharton has to do. He’s struggled in the last two games and not coped well with being targeted physically. Hopefully this dissuades anyone from bidding for him in the summer!

Franca's goal was somewhat similar to the Sarr goal at Fulham in that both players got in front of the opposition defender in a near post position.
Perhaps such a move has been straight off the training ground.

xG is about where the shot was taken from (ie. how likely a player is to score from that position), rather than how close a particular effort was - so whilst Mateta was really unlucky not to score when he hit the bar, it was a long-range shot which generally has a low conversion rate.

The effort off the bar had an xG rating of 0.02, and the one Ramsdale saved 0.08.

Our best opening according to xG was when Nketiah got a toe to Bednarek's back pass - rating of 0.44.

In all honesty we all saw that result comming last night 🤣

Positives: we hit 40 points, Franca scored and we did not loose or get any new injuries.

Season is done and dusted in my opinion. Most teams have the flip flops on now.

I don't think the performance was quite as bad as others have said, though it certainly wasn't good!

Mateta very unlucky with both of his efforts, and Eze should have done much better when Sarr found him in the box - we take any of those chances and it's a very different game.

That's as uncomfortable as I can remember Lacroix looking - credit to Onuachu, he was a real handful.

Lerma's passing is really problematic for us in build-up - he's just not able to punch the ball through the lines the way Wharton and Hughes do. I thought we improved significantly when Lerma moved to the back three and Kamada came into the midfield... we probably should have started like that.

Munoz was quiet again - I think these international breaks really take a toll on him; his form seems to drop right off in the games that follow.

Franca is raw but exciting - he's got electric pace and clearly keen to get on the ball and make things happen. Gives us a great option off the bench, as he showed with the goal.

I know he's been out a while, but Chilwell looks miles off it to me - not a signing I'd like to see us make permanent based on current evidence.

Also, just like Fulham, it was a great cross leading to a perfectly placed header only this time Lerma delivered like a precision arrow and Franca made a really sweet connection.

I will make the excuses.

Poor focus with a lot on the players' minds.

Rumours attaching to almost every outfield player and now the coaching staff.

And Saints had the weekend to rest and prepare. We did look leggy beside them.

But still cr@p.

Those who made a "Lord Mayors Show" prediction were probably spot on.

Annoying given how the teams above us did.

But those saying we have to play better this weekend:

1. Weed will possess the ball more. That suits us.
2. They have had the same prep time as us.
3. Last night we got a moral bosting last minute equalizer. They were beaten at home.

He is very good in the air and timing his runs into the box, that's what i have seen from clips of his goals from Brazil, if Mateta was to leave, still a choice of Nketiah, Sarr or Franca as CF, i think the players look tired and jaded last night, a lot of the still getting over jet lag, but not really the back ups, in CM or CD

It’s not all bad. The 3 B’s I am targeting as catchable ( Brighton, Boremouth and B’ford) along with Fulham all lost so we gained a point on them all. As Big Sam said: respect the point.
If we beat Brighton and other teams above us drop points this weekend then top 8 will really become a possibility.
