Sorloth

He always was a donkey 🤣
Most forwards miss penalties. The problem was Roy Hodgson. He didn’t understand forwards and admitted to it. He didn’t want Sorloth, Eze, Benteke, Wickham (when fit), Mateta only Zaha who got totally fed up with him. The irony of it was that Sorloth was recommended to Palace by Roy’s contracts in Scandinavia.

Defenders and midfielders, that was a different matter. Guehi, Mitchell and host of others bettered their careers under Roy. His philosophy was get 38 0-0 draws and you stay up!

As was Haaland, but Roy didn’t fancy him. I believe it was a £2 mil fee at the time from Molde. He was already showing signs of who he would become, but Roy thought he wasn’t physical enough for the Prem.

And hadn’t yet caught on to the invention of the gymnasium, apparently.

Can’t argue with that, sometimes you even get the feeling Roy was happy to only lose 1-0
As for Sorloth, for us, he was a statue regardless of how we played, yes he’s proved his worth since, but for us he resembled Dolph Lundgren in Rocky but probably less mobile

100% nonsense.

We still don't know if Sorloth would cut it in the Prem whenever he did play which yes it was limited he looked lost and tried things he could do in other leagues but doesn't work in Prem.

Some players need to be able to just play without the pressures etc and they gain from it later to return Salah is a clear example.

Roy needed players who could perform straight away not years later people forget this he didn't have the quality and would have been interesting to see what he would have done with this current group on players.

He had Eze and Olise (who is probably becoming the greatest winger in the world but in any case was, and is, truly world class). i and others regularly got frustrated at the amount of time they spent on the bench. I suspect if he had the current crop of players we wouldn’t see half of them play and certainly I doubt Wharton would. I also suspect that Mitchell would not be as good as he has become.

Agree he also did not have much time for JP who turn out alright with plenty of goals

Hodgson had, at times, better players than Glasner has today. Zaha, Townsend, McArthur, Milivojevic, Cabaye for starters. Add in Dann, Speroni, Ward, PVA, Schlupp, Ayew and one has the makings of a decent side. In his final season he also had Eze and Olise!
Most telling is that when Roy had to go we were heading for the trap door of relegation, Glasner stepped in early and with the same set of players completely turned us around to a storming finish for the season.
It appears to me that the players were tired of Hodgson's negativity and Glasner was a breath of fresh air.
I have to conclude therefore that if Hodgson had access to today's players it would be the same negative s*** that we saw season after season when he was in charge.

No he didn't to claim what you have is madness so is the list of players you put up.

Large % of those players was past their prime and Eze/Olise was injured for fair amount as well.

He kept Eze and Olise benched most of the time even when they were fit. Regardless of age McArthur was a superb player as was Zaha at the time he had them. I like Roy but he would not have won us anything.

It's now being reported that Barcelona want Sorloth to replace Lewandoski.
If so, his career still seems to be on an upward trajectory.
He's a very 'efficient' player to use the terminology loved by Glasner.
He sticks to what he's good at , and what he never really got a chance to demonstrate at Palace.
I think he could have done well under Glasner, but in any event he certainly was never going to flourish under Roy.

It was obvious to me that Sorloth had the physique of a great striker. What he lacked was coaching and confidence. We seem to have had a succession of underperforming strikers. What Palace needs is a good striker coach. We might even be able to turn Nketiah into a striker. Having said that, we have had a number of good strikers in our U18's and U21's but they leave because they know they will not get a chance.

Glenn Murray? He could keep his punditry gig as well.

If we could keep him fit we might have half a chance

He's a monster in the air, but quite sluggish on the deck. Not too dissimular to Benteke.

Stick a load of crosses in and he'll score. Expect him to dribble and do the pretty stuff he'll look pretty poor.

Incidentally its my biggest concern with Larsson, we know he's pretty decent in the air, but we cross so little.

I'd argue Olise's availability was much more important than Glasner. After his last start under Hodgson, Palace were in 14th place - 8 points above the relegation places. He then got injured and prior to his first start back (an away 1-0 defeat to Liverpool) Palace were in 15th position five points clear of 18th. We finished in 10th, 23 points above the drop
