Shakhtar Donetsk vs Crystal Palace Match Thread

That slick first goal last night was possibly our best team goal of the season - one touch first time passing between a group of players to put Sarr away for a clinical finish.
Larsen's goal was also very good demonstrating finesse in a dinked finish which left the outstretched keeper with no chance.

On a very positive evening in general I didn't like a couple of free headers which the opposition were afforded from corners.
I also felt that Mitchell played when not fully fit.
He normally deals comfortably with opponents down his side but he lacked his usual intensity in closing down players.

Wow just wow. It's been a while since I really got excited by a Palace game. Well done lads.

Shakhtar were really fast in movement and passing and made a game of it. If they had some decent finishers we would have got spanked, our defence apart from the goal was excellent . I loved it in the second half when Canvot shepherded the ball over the line by holding off their forward and the rest of the defence all gave him a clap on the back.

That said we were also unlucky that their keeper decided to put in a MOTM performance and we could have had 3 or 4 more.

I think the 2nd leg will be similar. They will come at us fast and hard so we need to catch them on the break. I would consider playing Lerma or Hughes to try and break up their midfield play. We only need to score 1 and I think it's game over.

Fantastic game against a good opposition.
Does anyone know if a player were to pick up another yellow in the second leg they will miss the final. I think Pino and Canvot both got yellow cards. Canvot has been immense in last months and would be a big miss if excluded from the final, so do we rest him if there's the possibility of being out of the final?

I disagree. I thought that OG'S starting line up yesterday sent out a positive message - we can and will get forward and score goals. Second leg is at home and we have the advantage and it is not a time to be timid.

Correct

Shakhtar are classy going forward but shaky if you can get at their back line. In the previous round they had a 3-0 lead after the first game and AK didn't bother to play their main attackers for the second leg. When they were subbed on late in the game they promptly scored two goals.

They will create something if we sit back so we need to get the ball to our forwards in dangerous positions and we will get chances.

Our European journey has shown us one thing, it’s so easy to pick up yellow cards for the slightest thing. Any contact results in a free kick, so easy to break up play, get a touch, go down, free kick. Why reffing a game in Europe should be different from reffing a prem game is a puzzle.

The Canvot yellow yesterday was an absolute joke. His hand touched the guys chest and he flipped backwards like he'd been choke slammed. Very annoying.

Ref was terrible giving Shakhtar soft cards for small touches and they just fell over. Thankfully we got the win that's what's Matters.

We have a number of yellows now ,couple very unfair by crap Referring but at this level that’s what we’ve seen throughout

Need zero yellows next Thursday as will be costly getting to Final

Well done Palace 2nd half showed more tenacity & we weathered the Brazilian show boys & their speed

At Selhurst sees us get a 2-0 win yet with 40% possession

Feeling very positive this morning, I reckon it will be Strasbourg who will go through so how do feel about that ? Mid table in the french league As the Prem is a stronger league gotta make favourites

In answer to your Q? about Cautions, as it was reset for the semi-finals, any player who is cautioned in both legs will not miss the final. So, Canvot & Pino are ok for the final, only a red in the 2nd leg would mean suspension.

Please stay. All is forgiven!

Really impressed with us last night. Shaktar, with their Brazilians seem very one dimensional, attack and no much else. Which is bad for how we set up for the counter attack. They clearly didn't do their homework on us and if it was last season's Palace, we could have put 5 or 6 past them.

What stood out for me was how up for it we were. LaCroix, Mitchell, Wharton, Canvot. Kamada all standouts.

Not to get carried away though, we need to get an early lead next Thursday, we're "only" up 3-1 at half time.

Think they were cleared before this game so only way to miss the final (if we get there) is being sent off as you need 3 yellows for a ban

Might be best to keep Canvot on the bench then. He does tend to get feisty and I wouldn't want him to miss the final. Pino doesn't matter.
