Semi Final Match Thread

Millwall didn't play a PL side until the final, they lost 4-0 to the Manure and didn't have a shot on goal. They should be ashamed of themselves.

In both our finals we have had a go and the players gave the fans something to be proud of. I fully expect us to have a go at City win or lose.
I believe the score was 3-0.
Dennis Wise was their manager.
Matt Lawrence was the Millwall captain.
The final was held at the Millennium Stadium,Cardiff.

This feels a bit "after the party" but it's the first opportunity I have had to post, and to be honest, I am desperate to post about yesterday. I am 57 years old, 50 of them as a Palace fan. Yesterday was one of the very best of those days as a Palace fan, and you may think I am sad to say so, but was also one of the best days of my life.

If you are part of this site you almost certainly get what it is to be emotionally invested in your football team. I have a pretty logical brain and 57 years of life experience, which should both tell me it's just a football team, and that Palace's fortunes should not have such a deep impact on how I feel. A mild disappointment or a moment of excitement perhaps, but not more than that.

Yesterday I went to the game with my 20 year old daughter, who has become an ardent fan over the past 18 months despite seeing a pretty small proportion of wins in the game she has been to. We watched one of the best Palace performances ever, made all the greater by the occasion itself.

I am trying to think of my other highlights - Burnley in 1979, the cup final in 1990 (not the replay !) where we got so close and I couldn't believe I was watching Palace walk out onto Wembley's turf for the cup final, and I think both the wins against Brighton and Watford in 2013 were all brilliant (and even the unspeakable relief of Stockport in 2003 was very memorable). But to turn up as underdogs against a very good Villa team (I was expecting to lose), to play brilliantly with heroic individual performances to a man, to score 2 fantastic quality goals, then to celebrate a 3rd goal that sealed the deal, and celebrate amongst the our fans with pure, unbridled joy...it was priceless.

My daughter claimed she saw a tear in my eye - I denied it but I was lying 🤣. And to think I launched a thread about this season being a bit dull ! Whatever happens in the final, yesterday's occasion cannot be taken away from us. COYP.

I totally get this.i got all emotional too. Being a palace fan for the best part of 50 years takes its toll. These past 10 years have been amazing really compared to some of the dark days. You try to tell yourself… it’s just a game, but it really isn’t to us lot.

It took a good week for me to get over the way we threw away the game to city, I was properly pissed off. Now I understand why. It’s so it will feel so much better if we beat them in the final.

Just once. Just once in my life time I want to know how it feels to win a big one.

If we then go on to smash the Europa league next year then into the champions league… well could you imagine. But I’ll take this FA cup and be forever grateful for the memory. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You're setting your sights high Den ! If we beat City I will definitely not be able to deny there would be a tear or two in my eye. Totally agree, wouldn't it be brilliant for it to be Palace, for once in our lives, and for once in our history.

I can echo sentiments on here that yesterday was probably the Pinnacle of my time as a palace supporter.

The only other game that matched the atmosphere for me was the game against everton where we won 4-0.
That was the Simod Cup in the days of Virgin shirts, and red and blue balloons even more than yesterday. It was a great occasion - could do with a result like that against Everton these days.

Can't believe I was watching Palace. And the penny has dropped for Kamada - perfect timing. I hate to tempt fate but I really do think we're going to win it. We're brilliant at making chances with the high press, we do need to improve on creating chances from possession rather than from the oppo's possession though. And I think Sarr should have got motm. Considering the occasion and the opposition that's the best Palace performance I've witnessed in 52 years as a fan. Hopefully in three weeks' time it will be relegated to second best. COYP!!! 😀

funny the things you think about, it just occurred to me that if we win the cup… we would play in the charity shield, how mad is that. Palace… charity shield, winners of the cup v champions of England and we could be there 😳😳😳

Plus our last game of the season would be first game of next season… Liverpool and back at Wembley to boot. In Europe. Wow 😳😳 🤞🏻🤞🏻🙏🏼🙏🏼

They're probably worth more now than they cost then.
It's only in recent years that I've thought about that semi final - it was the year after Hillsborough, the exact same game (semi final) against Liverpool who had all of those supporters killed, yet I don't recall ever hearing anything about it in the run-up to, or at the game. And I honestly hadn't given it a thought at the time. Perhaps it was because we were so excited about getting there, or whether I was a self-centred 26 year old who was totally blinkered to our cause, I don't know.
These days there would have been a lot more made of it I reckon.

What an amazing day... one of my very best days as a Palace fan since 1980 (home v Liverpool, 0-0, never stopped raining...). The thing that struck me most was the togetherness of the fans, just like OG talks about the togetherness of the players that we showed in spades. We just had more heart out there, we wanted it more, and the tactics against Villa were spot on again.

But the fans... hugging lads going through the gates after some hat-swapping and childish but funny chat about drugs hidden in a hard-to-reach place that left the security guard concerned... having to drink Budweiser pish inside didn't even matter... I was in Block 138 right at the back (row 44, 143&4) and some of the lads around us were in bits through the game, even I didn't stop pacing around my tiny little space... cue more hugging and 'it'll be alright mate' even though I was as nervous as him... banging on the ceiling above us until a light fell out... being right behind Lucas Digne's strike and thinking 'that's in' before Hendo pulled off a worldie... Eze's fvcking unbelievable ping that set the tone (LOVE that he just stood there until he couldn't help smiling)... the togetherness on the pitch - Eze consoling Mateta, JP consoling Tyrick... the work rate that led to the goals - Wharts nicks it, and JP passes FIRST-TIME to Sarr which sent him away...

But the fans... everyone was brilliant and that's why I love being a Palace fan. The noise, the cameraderie and now we have a great team and an astute manager. We will give City a proper game, no doubt, and they better have the heart we do if they want to win it. COME ON!

A final word about the Villa fans we chatted to in the Wetherspoons at Baker St afterwards. All cracking lads and proper football fans. No nonsense, just sound chat.

Bring on 17th May... 😎

I posted about the selection of Kamada before the game but he did pretty well I thought.
I was in Spain and so missed the game - caught up on TV yesterday.
What a day everyone must have had and well played Palace - everyone was a star on and off the pitch!
Looking forward to the final - would have preferred Forest but who cares now!
Roll on May 17th!

brilliant. I'm 55 and 48 years Palace supporting, but agree with everything you say. As a Palace fan i try not to get too optimistic before a game and afterwards try and stay humble as football can easily bite you on the bum!

However, i did definitely have a tear in my eye. My brother passed last summer and was a massive Palace fan. Whenever we now win i always look up and have a little 'chat' with him. RIP Nick

I'd imagine he'll be proud.

I certainly was on Saturday. As Living in Hope mentioned, it felt surreal to me, watching Palace so nonchalantly sweep aside a CL side at Wembley, in the semi-final of the FA Cup.

Let's hope there's a bigger moment to come quite soon!
