I’ve got no problem with us not spending much on players but it would just be nice to have a bit of clarity from the hierarchy so we know.

I’ve literally just said the same to a mate on the phone, I know where we’re at as a club and I’m fine with it, we eventually have to sell our best players and it’s a struggle for us getting players in, but same as you I wish SP would come out and explain this to us, if moneys tight and/or were restricted with the regulations and we’ve got to more or less go with what we’ve got, then fine, but it would be nice to hear it from the gaffer

But we also can raise revenue by selling players.
I know we all feel attachment to our beloved hero’s and feel gutted when they move on (especially when it’s a key player like Max) but the model of selling players once we have developed them is n important part of our ability to generate funds for new players. The problem is average young replacements are now millions of pounds overpriced- so instead of selling one prized asset for 3 (or maybe 4) new additions we’re ending up spending almost the same amount to bring in a replacement! It’s gone mad!
So bringing in out of contract players or promoting from the academy is the only realistic way we can keep improving……until we can increase revenue through match days.

It’s amazing that we’ve been doing so well when you actually sit and think about it.

The game is rigged to where the clubs that were able to generate revenue before the rules came in are able to pay more which gives them a higher chance of success by being able to spend more then small clubs.

Deloitte puts out some interesting information on the financial breakdown. Their numbers tend to be for the year before because the most recent numbers haven't been released. I stole the chart below from them so you can see how the higher profile clubs are able to spend more overall but have a smaller wage/revenue ratio so that they can add more during the windows while mid and lower tier teams are a signing or two away from busting that limit. While the upgraded stand is going to really help out, it needed to be done a few years ago.


A key take away for me is that at a minimum, we need to stay up because if we get relegated, it becomes a huge challenge to field a squad that can keep you up because the finances go out the window like my wife shopping on Amazon.

Absolutely this. We do best when we bring players in under the radar or when the deal is well advanced before news breaks out. It's right that the club doesn't let on how much or little it's planning to spend in any particular window.

While the signing of Johnson looks poor as he has contributed nothing I completely understand JSL. A regular criticism of the club has been we sell players without a replacement lined up. In JSL’s case he was the replacement for JPM. Yes it was an awful lot of money but that is the market for a premier league striker. As it turned out the JPM transfer didn’t happen. However, I can’t really criticise the club for their planning on that one. In any event up front was an area we badly lacked any depth in.

The really bad signing was Nketiah for the thick end of £30m. A player with a bang average record who didn’t fit the system and can’t play as a loan front man.

Agreed, although to be fair to the club at the time we bought Nketiah, Mateta had only just started scoring after being crap for years, and we had been hunting for a striker most of that time, so I can understand how it happened.

Seriously, it is like that film, as the point of the story was that people in charge of something can't always tell people who care about that thing everything there is to know, as it wouldn't help them to do a good job running that thing.

We don't need to know the ins and outs, I mean at the end of each window when we’re proudly lining up our bargains and free transfers in the new kit when fans were expecting some big signings(not me by the way) it would be nice if SP would explain why after selling 3 of our best players why we’re unable to spend much this summer. We can all guess, £85 million in January? New stand? PSR squad ratio etc, maybe players just don’t like parish and don’t fancy coming to us.
A bit of an explanation after last seasons summer window would’ve been nice because we clearly needed players. I always bang on about how it’s not like popping into Tesco’s and taking your pick of any players and fans get on my nerves keep saying we should be buying x y z players, it’s not that easy and I get we’re not able to throw money around like some clubs(except in January in a last ditch effort probably to change glasners mind) but just a few words to put fans straight on how it as it the club would be nice.

If Steve told the truth he would have to say that we wanted players A, B and C but we had financial constraints and the directors were not allowed to put more money in. So instead we bought X, Y and Z who were the best of a bad bunch. I wonder how this players would feel?

Last season it was we didn’t know what European competition we would be in - now this..!!

He would have known this back in January when he splashed out nigh on £80M on Larsen and Johnson - both of which were surplus to requirements and largely ineffective when given the opportunity as things turned out - and arguably still are.

Bottom line it seems we have the headroom, even to comply with UEFA rules to do what we need to do.

I talked about SCR in the Lacroix thread and was lambasted for it. Sure enough Lacroix went for around the amount I reckoned we would sell him for. The stark reality is when you look at commercial revenue the likes of Brighton are getting 75% more than us, not only is that a 12mill a season extra than us but also has a double effect of allowing greater money to be spent on wages and transfers.

I love Selhurst Park, but it really is the millstone around our necks. Just look at the slow to minimal progres sthe main stand is taking. One day we might get it but the other sides are undevelopable. We need to move,

If we haven't got the headroom then it can't be an excuse - it's a genuine reason. A number of commentators are saying this is the reason, whilst others say differently. Larsen and Johnson weren't surplus when we bought them. Mateta was still out for several weeks because of his knee issue hence Larsen got games and Nketiah was injured. Who was going to be the striker when Sarr was still at Afcon if we hadn't bought Larsen?

It's noticeable that the only time you have a good word to say about Parish is when people accuse you of having a downer on him. Hmmm, makes one wonder?

They've done well with loans over that time. Other than Harvey Elliott of course, but that was a bit political with their change in directors.

Not sure what people expected it's clear on the chart what the issue is and the new stand will not solve that.

Stadiums 45,000+is required and our current location can't have that so spending 200m+ on one stand is merging a fresh rurd with an old one to make it bit bigger plus more fresh.
