SCR restrictions

I have just received a protracted 'Unvarnished' message from a rather disgruntled supporter who was clearly having a meltdown like seeing Arthur Negus hurl a priceless jardinière against the wall.
His message ended "Onwards and downwards".

I suspect many supporters are of a similar mindset.
We have won the FA Cup, Charity Shield and the Conference League which propels us into the Europa League yet a sizeable number of our devotees are probably of the same mind as those of clubs who have just reached the PL.
As someone opined to me, we will reach the next level - Downwards !
Positivity is in short supply.

We can spend up to £120m on players this window, subject to owners putting their hands in their pockets.
So we can spend, but if the plan is to strengthen the squad with 4 players, then £100m wont go far. We have apparently bid €10m upfront with add ons for the Torino kid who was valued at €3m.
it will be free agents or kids who we take a punt on and hope they come good and go up in value.

Agreed! The cashflow forecasting alone must be mind boggling with new spending regimes. It does bring to mind the other thread on "can you have a Five Year Plan?". I am not sure how you can unless you are at either end of the success spectrum (challenging for major honours every year; or Burnley).

It makes it all the more mind boggling that we spent those sums in January. Did we just leave a kid on work experience in charge for the month. It just seems utterly ridiculous that we just decided to splurge a huge % of our transfer budget on two distinctly average players. One of whom I think will even struggle to get into match day squads for us next season.

Says who? and on what basis can owners put their hands in their pockets given the regulations? If owners can put their hands in their pockets why are Newcastle struggling?

That's a very expensive bit of panicking!! Something Steve is usually good at avoiding. A real shame as it feels like that blip in judgement is going to really hold us back. It feels similar to when we were hamstrung for a few seasons by the fees and wages of Sakho and Benteke and had to get by on cheap transfers, experience, gritty football and Roy (plus Zaha of course).

Maybe we had to spend to get deals done in the prior financial year. The SCR is, I believe, calculated on annul basis, unlike its’ predecessor the PSR
 
While the signing of Johnson looks poor as he has contributed nothing I completely understand JSL. A regular criticism of the club has been we sell players without a replacement lined up. In JSL’s case he was the replacement for JPM. Yes it was an awful lot of money but that is the market for a premier league striker. As it turned out the JPM transfer didn’t happen. However, I can’t really criticise the club for their planning on that one. In any event up front was an area we badly lacked any depth in.

The really bad signing was Nketiah for the thick end of £30m. A player with a bang average record who didn’t fit the system and can’t play as a loan front man.
 
But we also can raise revenue by selling players.
I know we all feel attachment to our beloved hero’s and feel gutted when they move on (especially when it’s a key player like Max) but the model of selling players once we have developed them is n important part of our ability to generate funds for new players. The problem is average young replacements are now millions of pounds overpriced- so instead of selling one prized asset for 3 (or maybe 4) new additions we’re ending up spending almost the same amount to bring in a replacement! It’s gone mad!
So bringing in out of contract players or promoting from the academy is the only realistic way we can keep improving……until we can increase revenue through match days.

It’s amazing that we’ve been doing so well when you actually sit and think about it.
