Romain Esse

That's been a significant factor in our transfer dealings. You only need to look at ManUre to see what happens when you buy players with attitude problems or other character issues.
I say we can thank Dougie Freedman for that. When he was manager he got a lot of stick for being picky with signings. He went on and on about the right character being critical. It was that team he pulled together that took us up and kept us in the prem when we were perhaps punching above our weight. This has continued in the prem with so many impressive characters / players. We hear so often how good the morale is at palace

I hope Esse does well…..but perhaps not too well initially .

It’s worth noting that the media were already selling Wharton to Man City or Arsenal after a handful of excellent performances last season.
He’d barely got his feet under the table with us.

If we do unlock a gem it would be nice to see the player perform for a few seasons with us before he’s whisked off to one of the ‘big’ clubs.

Yes, I know about the ‘business model’ but I’m here for the football.

If Wharton does have a strong end to the season, no doubt there will be interest from top clubs seeking to rebuild.
This would be on top of Guehi’s likely departure and possible interest in Lacroix if he retains his consistency.
It sometimes feels that we’re running to stand still.

With his contract running till 2030, we should be able to keep hold of him for 2 or 3 years if he turns out to be another Olise or Wharton so I'd love to see him do well from the start.

Guehi is likely to go in the Summer. I'm hoping he'll agree a 1 year extension with a release clause so we can get a decent fee for him.

As for Wharton, the lad's got his head screwed on. I don't see him wanting to leave or us allowing him to this Summer.

I just hope he is half as good as the amount of hype surrounding his signing.

He needs to do a lot to satisfy the expectations of many folk, and I am expecting Ollie to keep his reins on until we've reached the magic 40 points.

I get wanting to keep all the gems but we don’t have the finances to say no.
Ie if selling Wharton in a couple of years clears our rebuild 😂 (if it starts) and puts dough in the bank then that’s how it is.
Unless some multi Man City billionaire rocks up with no demands on payback we are where we are.

I think that sums up the predicament of a club like Palace staying in the prem, on the other hand I'd say our squad is far superior to our first couple of seasons in the prem, individually our defenders are on a different level, five first class midfielders to choose from, Mateta is one of the best strikers we've ever had, only Wrighty would be definitely superior, and the creative flair of Zaha, Bolasie and Olise is continuing with the presence of Eze, Sarr and now Esse. We're very solid now, and wheras before there was a real glass ceiling in the top half now we're only a bit of improvement away from the top eight.

Out of interest, how do you know that Wharton has his head screwed on or what his ambitions are for his future?

The complication with signing any young players of potential these days is the presence of the dreaded release clause, and when they kick in.
Apparently Esse had one in his contract at Millwall which was due to operate during the summer, but we paid a little over the odds to get him 6 months early.
It would be no surprise if there is a release clause in his Palace contract either.

His decision to move to us rather than Chelsea was based on his belief that we give young players the opportunity and help them improve. He was impressed with how Olise, Eze and Guehi have developed at Palace.
So, we are viewed as a stepping stone.

We have signed the best young attacking talent in the championship. Players now want to join Palace for the reason that they've seen what's happened to Olise.

Zaha put players and agents off us, but that's now changed, we are a stepping stone, but that suits us and is a very sustainable model.

Can't wait to watch Esse in a Palace shirt, I know a lot about him.

'Very sustainable models' don't get fans off their seats or are discussed by fans 30 years on in a pub reminiscing about great games and players.

Some discussion forums now read like paragraphs from a financial report.

If football isn't about passion and excitement , it's truly lost it's way.

I don't want the likes of Reading and Millwall to act as a feeder club for us any more than I want us to act as a feeder club for Chelsea or Arsenal.
That leads to stagnation and ultimately football becoming boring.
It means that Reading are unlikely to achieve a top 10 Premier League position again or Millwall get to a FA Cup Final, things that have both happened not so long ago.

Football, like most sports, without genuine competition is dead.
