Retained and Released list

True, but he was already a Cork City senior player. He may have qualified as home grown here. I couldn't say. I wouldn't fully know enough about new Academy rules.

There’s no fixed definition really, but I think if you put years into a kids development it’s reasonable to consider them your academy player - also true of Devenny, Imray, Kporha for example.

A player who I missed from our academy who is touted as good enough to play for the 1st team is Caleb Kporha.
He was already in the 1st team squad but had a bad injury. Does anyone have news on him?

That's not retained and released territory then. I'd be be surprised otherwise

He looked real quality....looking into it he isn't old enough to sign a contract and thus couldn't be promoted into the first team squad.

I thought Drakes Thomas was too young but apparently he's 17 and old enough.

Learning about this stuff.

There is some kind of 16 to 21 and some kind of three years before 21 qualification. I couldn't say exactly what they mean for transfers and future fees. I believe Mitchell and Wharton are three years before 21 players - which helps for European squad numbers. I believe anyone who's been two years in the academy and is under 21 doesn't need to be registered either. They still qualify. Three years U21 and they qualify as home grown at club. Three years U21 in England counts as home grown in Nation.

Remi Mathews
Lerma
Doucoure

All of them got renewed deals

So add Clyne to list for me that is 4 wasted spots (I can't see Doucoure doing anything in future look how long he has been out but in some ways I can understand it)

Matthews signed a 2 year deal last summer, and is a 3rd choice keeper so largely irrelevant - we are not going to get much better to come and never play.

Doucoure signed a 5 year deal in 2023… regardless , I don’t agree we should be letting players like that walk on a free.

Lerma has been a key part of the squad over the last two seasons and provided good cover in multiple positions - I don’t particularly rate him but he would cost north of £20m to replace.

Clyne is obviously the most reasonable shout but I can’t imagine he’s on massive wages.

I thought we released Clyne?

There is value in having old heads in a squad, especially the younger it gets and as foreign players come in.

Cohesion matters, you need players who know the set up and love the place it's why Ward was here for probably a year longer than usual.

Parish understands this, he has a policy of keeping long standing Palace icons....Patrick McCarthy would have been long gone at some clubs but we rightly value him.

It's also why someone like Freedman did much better at Palace than elsewhere......Human beings aren't robots.....Some players and managers/coaches do better at some clubs rather than at others because of how they settle.

Marsh and Rodney obviously have a future as professionals, it's just about at what level.

The only question for me is that I assumed that the academy was meant to either feed the 1st team....but obviously that would be rare, but it does happen.....or that we were meant to sell players to help at least pay for part of the academy.

Maybe I'm wrong, but we don't really seem to have sold anyone for quite a while.

While the last couple of years seem to have been empty in terms of exciting players emerging for the first team. When you look at Cardines, Benamar, Casey and Drakes-Thomas (still a scholar) Lucca Benetton (still a scholar) there is some optimism for the next few years....if we can retain them.

Does anyone have any other players from those retained lists that they think might end up playing regularly for us.....I view Rio Cardines as one of those to play more regualy next season, due to the extended fixtures.....I think he is good enough.
Romain Esse will make it somewhere. Could be here, could be elsewhere. New manager means he has a chance to impress his way into the squad. Danny Imray should be stepping up right now. David Ozoh?

What's happening with Rak-Sakyi? Doesn't seem he will ever have a spot here but he should find one at the top level.

I think if making it was purely based upon talent then Esse would already have made it. If he can mature and adapt then he's fine....but he wouldn't be the first player who wasted their potential because of the requirements outside of talent.

Both Imray and Ozoh are interesting figures. I see both being sold or released but they are clearly already proven professionals.

Rak-Sakyi, more than anybody else is the one that should have made it in our side, but for whatever reason didn't.....Difficult and sullen? Don't know, but clearly talented.

Those of those names above who don't break into our squad... should be expected to be sold on at a profit.

I presume that being retained gives us the option to sell rather than release a player. I would expect Rak Sakyi to move on in the summer in the Championship where he has done OK with Stoke without making a big impression. Esse did OK as well at Coventry but mainly from the bench. Glasner was not impressed with his selfishness, putting himself before the team. However, he may well have learned a few lessons and will be given another chance.
