Reform

There is nothing wrong with wanting clean air, clean water, healthy food, to recycle most of our waste and to be wholly energy secure on renewables.

Not mad cap ideas any more. Actually mainstream, and all the main parties aspire to them (at least by lip service).

Trouble with the Greens is that they are an effective protest movement. However, next election they may well acquire 50 + seats. Accidentally. Talk about rabbits in the headlights. Back to Robert Redford at the end of The candidate. What do we do now...
I am in the Trump camp of "Drill, baby drill" and totally agree with him about wind turbines.
Outside of HOL my views on this subject are well known. Will leave my diatribe for another day !!

I think we need pressure groups to keep politicians on their toes, but The Green crowd often seem to be the same blue haired loons who will march for any cause that is anti establishment, anti British or to promote the needs of a tiny minority over the many.

They often tend to have similar characteristics.

The 'Greens' selected a new leader, not from their MPs sitting in Parliament, but campaigner Zack Polanski who once claimed he could increase the size of women’s breasts with his mind.
It hasn't worked for me, those who have claimed I am "Narrow-Minded" might have a point !

There was a well endowed lady in our office (1980s) a bit thick. My old boss bet her a £5 he could make her breasts jiggle without touching them. She agreed so he made a grab for them. "but you touched them she said" "Yeah but it was worth a fiver".

We all laughed including her but you could never do that today. Even back then it was naughty.

🤣 🤣 🤣 👍

Naughty but nice for your boss fondling such large bosoms.

Yeah.

I'm a bit on the fence with that one.

If anyone grabbed my missus tits when she was at work, they would be eating through a straw.

Worth a Goldan Globes award . 😆

It’s not just not wrong, it’s both essential and economically sound to become as self sufficient as possible so far as energy is concerned. With the costs of renewables now cheaper than new fossil fuel sources the only justification to maintain some fossil fuel production is to retain flexibility.

We cannot become wholly self sufficient in other areas but removing energy dependency goes a long way towards improving things. Which says nothing at all about trying to mitigate the impact of climate change.

Trump has always been naive, narrow minded and completely wrong on this issue. As he is on almost everything. Indeed I would need to think for a long time to find any he was right on.

It’s a surprise though that you agree with him as it is self evident nonsense. We need to transition to renewables both for energy security and climate change mitigation. Now that renewables are delivering cheaper energy than new fossil fuel production there is also an economic imperative. It’s win, win, win! Not drill, drill, drill.

Only cheaper because the new money grabbing tax for production and purchase.
Artificially cheaper but the long game to the environment will be a lot worse for the earth. All those boats dragging up boron and mines getting the lithium. Where do the used batteries actually go ?

Poison the well for others before you exit stage left. What a legacy.

It's the fault of the establishment that progress became such a problem that this clowns got involved.

Didn't happen with the CFC ban.

Oil and gas subsidies are far in excess of any green subsidies.

If you were to abolish big oil subsidy your bills would be unaffordable. Right now leccy £per kW is linked to gas production cost rather than the far cheaper renewable production cost.

EDIT

In 2024, the UK's green energy subsidies, primarily through the Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, reached record highs, with total payments for renewable energy funding rising to approximately £2.4 billion

The UK government currently provides an estimated £17.5 billion in fossil fuel subsidies and support per year.

FURTHERMORE....

The UK government’s move to award £22bn in subsidies to carbon capture projects followed a sharp increase in lobbying by the fossil fuel industry. Oil and gas giants such as Equinor, BP, and ExxonMobil attended 24 of 44 external ministerial meetings to discuss carbon capture and storage (CCS) in 2023, according to official transparency records....

As for Lithium, it's widely available. And I think you mean Cobolt, not Boron, which is being phased out as battery tech develops. But I'll tell you something, Cobolt has been used in large quantities for decades as a catalyst for removing sulphates from oil during the refining process. I don't remember you complaining about that.

Used batteries are 99% recyclable, it would be a total waste of those metals not to. It can already be done but it's a new industry because batteries are only just beginning end of life. There are ways being developed of servicing older batteries, "washing" them, so they perform again as new. Tesla take old car batteries and use them in their power station stores as they are perfectly fine for that role.

I don't buy EVs as a 'solution' to anything, I think we're already 30 years too late and f***ed, but please don't insult me by trying to put some equivalency between green tech and oil, that's just f***ing embarassing.

They have a limited appeal and at every general election they poll around 7-10%. They do better other elections as a protest vote, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

If they want to break out of their niche and become a serious threat to the other parties they need sensible policies. So far they appear to be against everything and for nothing.

Ask them if they support wind power or tidal barrages or nuclear energy? They are mostly water melons, green on the outside red on the inside. Tax, ban and spend is how I would sum they up.

I stand firmly in the 'Donald Trump' camp on this matter and I have got on my 'Soapbox' on numerous occasions outside of HOL, the latest only recently.
I respectfully disagree with you but respect your right to express your opinion.
I have nothing more to add so will not get drawn into a protracted debate. Far easier to express my view vehemently in public on this issue where the spin dryer of my vitriolic comments is very much in evidence.
