Raphael Le Guen

He simply cannot have done enough in six professional games to show he is ready to play week in week out in the premier league, even if he was excellent in all six games. He's essentially one with potential, as Canvot was/is.

Firstly, that means he cannot be a direct replacement for Lacroix.

Secondly, that means we would have three first team squad centre backs who we hope will develop into good enough players (this lad, Canvot, and Riad) and only one senior player in Richards. I'd think we need another senior defender, and I can't see that we can afford to buy one of those, and also spend even this modest transfer fee on a young squad player with potential, too.

Thirdly, if we're in the business of bringing in young players with this little experience and developing them, should we not take from the academy instead?

Hopefully he's brilliant, but I'm not at all sure about this signing.

Let's not forget Mitchell only made 4 appearances for us before he became a regular under Roy. Admittedly they were in the PL but let's not right this guy off just yet due to the number of appearances.

We didn't pay anything for Mitch, though.

I'm certainly not writing this kid off, but it's a very odd relationship between achievement and price tag.

Highlights reel is very good for a player who has only played 6 games.

Means just by pure statistical certainties that that's a significant representation of his actual game time thus far, which is of course rare for those things.

Happy to be corrected but haven’t seen a price mentioned for Le Guen yet.

Matsima , supposedly 30 mill Euro .

Le Guen does seem to be one for development , next season so you need to wonder whether we need another senior CB .

Richards , Canvot and Riad as lead contenders with Matsima obvious alternative if he arrives .

Mingueza seems to be mentioned more as a back up for Munoz , though has played CB .

Sosa can , but hasn’t set the world on fire .

Then can any of the young guys step up .

I was impressed with Tayo when he had a couple of games under ? Roy and thought he looked like the next Aaron / Tyrrick but he seemed to loose momentum over the last two seasons .

Had a good review playing CB in one of the practice games ??

We’ve been linked to a couple of senior CB’s in the last couple of weeks out side the two current possible incomings .

A watch this space .

Matsima's the replacement if it happens. This lads for the future - no problem with that. Might have to play a bit and could be loaned out in January if progress slow.
The Chelsea guy (too lazy to look up name) is Plan B or maybe C. I'd leave that alone unless its a loan because it will blur the Lacroix deal in Chelsea's favour.

I agree about Canvot being a leading contender. Last year he was the kid who dun good. He's proved that with some excellent performances against the best attackers in the PL.

As far as I am concerned he is no longer the "kid" but a defender who can be relied upon.

Been mentioned his price is €20 million, if that’s true it’s crazy money for a kid who has played just half a dozen professional games. It’s almost as if somebody has added an extra zero because it’s us, at that price it’s a no from me.

Totally agree, rather like throwing g money down the drain, but what else is expected from Hobbo??

Better to spend these funds on either one of the Chelsea defenders, truly proven at this level or better still, cancel the Lacroix deal.,as his valuation is drastically undervalued!!

I'm interested in if the two French centre halves were on our radar before Sage joined.
Are they his personal recommendations?
It's not necessarily a problem if they are, but it doesn't fit the model of the Director of Football selecting players that fit the manager's profile of positions he's looking to fill.
We've seen clubs like Forest and Chelsea going through loads of managers and ending up with disparate squads made up of players preferred by their various managers.

I suppose because we paid a similar price for LaCroix we expect for that sort of money someone who’s first team ready now, but then didn’t we pay similar for Canvot? and he was supposed to be for the ‘future’ as well.
My guess is the squads going to be thin again this season and we’ll see more of this lad than we thought, ala Canvot last season

To me it makes more sense to aim a lower fee with a % of a future sale . Makes it easier for us , but gives an incentive to sell to us given our track record .

20 for a player with 6 pro games . That the EPL tax . We haven’t payed that for players with potential before .

Max was an established player in the BL and was ? 18 ..

It is crazy, but what would you do if someone wanted to buy a young player who had just got into the 1st team? You certainly wouldn't want to sell.

We overpaid for Canvot last year based on c 20 games but as the end of the window approaches clubs get a little desperate.

Hopefully, the fee has a significant amount of add ons included. Surely we wouldn't pay more than 50% upfront.

It is a massive gamble though and although Canvot is improving he is still a work in progress and clearly still the junior member of that defence.

I would hope we stick the young lad with the U21s for a while to get him up to speed etc, something we didn't do with Canvot.
