Prof Jason Arday

I was involved in Change Management a lot. I partly agree with you that those who just said "sack these people and automate the process" and then wafted off were as you say just BS merchants.

As a Project Manager I was the mug who actually had to make it happen so Change Managements as such can have hard targets.

I should imagine with AI coming in that this consultancy work will be in demand.

A kind of depressing, if necessary capitalism.

The pound of flesh.

Overdone, turnover increases and keeping good staff becomes nearly impossible.
Very much a two way street now. Try making anyone stay who's any good. Jobs are not for life, more like a couple of years. People don't have a 25 year career and get a clock. Plus, companies barely value long service anyway. They look at you as someone who didn't have the gumption to go elsewhere. Two way street. I'm 16 years in my job. It's now age that keeps me there.

the future is in having clients rather than having an employer.

They can but in my experience if their recommendations don't work it's the staff who have to carry the can despite giving explicit reasons as to why they wouldn't in the first place.
Agreed. As I said I was the mug who had to make it happen even if I thought it was a bad move.

I was always envious of the types of people you are suggesting. You know the ones who go to every meeting but never have a takeaway action, me I was the poor sod who satchel was full up with tasks, so I hated meetings, I knew what was coming.

How long did you have to do Change Management before you were allowed to manage the paper money?

Was "Sociology" ever a real subject anywhere ?

A way back from Media Studies, but nudging ahead of Home Economics. 🙂

Arday was Prof of Sociology of Education. So this is within the Education and Teaching faculties of Higher Ed. not the Sociology Dept where work of quality used to be done when I was a student in the 90's but now...no doubt the workerati make the sector a total minefield.

Another aspect to the Arday tragedy is that his family is full of mental health professionals, some of them quite senior in London. That he could not reach out to them or obtain crisis mental heath support is a sad indictment of NHS mental healthcare. Im told his brother is called Simon apparently, from NHS Imperial Trust. Condolences to all.

I wasn't high enough up the greasy pole for that. My last job was to move our department to India so I and most of my colleagues were made redundant.

On my last day I sent the usual BS email to the seniors thanking them, how much I enjoyed working for the company blah blah. On the basis that you never know when you will need a job (I was back in 3 years, never thought I would be).

My colleague's email to the same senior group was slightly different and more braver. He pointed out that they owned shares in the Indian outsourcing company so wasn't that a conflict of interest (he was actually more ruder).

As I said, I licked ass, he kicked ass. Unfortunately the last I heard he had become a door to door salesmen and was struggling financially and mentally whereas I was back in a well paid job.

It's not right but we all have to pay the mortgage and I don't regret my actions.

In the end he died as he lived immoral and cowardly. RIP

What a fuckin vile post.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among men under 50 in the UK, claiming over 5000 lives a year. Around 15 men a day take their own life in the UK.

But you think they're immoral and cowardly.

Disgusting.

Autism is a very wide ranging condition.

Classically it speaks to difficulties with social interaction and communication.....it's often over diagnosed.

It's only really worth talking about as a harmful condition when it's low functioning as many males (it's a majority male condition) have autism to a mild degree and it doesn't harm them in life.....when it's mild it can be the guy who's socially awkward and doesn't know quite what to say. We never use to even bother labelling this.

Indeed, most with high functioning autism made the modern world and are some of the most successful people as a high IQ bridges many problems.

But low functioning autism is where the real problems are.
i work for a kids charity and part of our offering is a school that specialises in autistic support.

The terms high and low functioning aren't really used anymore but i know what you mean and do agree, most people with minor levels on the autism spectrum can lead successful lives and can have high IQs. Think of professions such as actuarial and some sciences etc

However, autism is rarely a condition by itself - those who need the most support will usually have other issues too, whether it be ADHD, OCD, physical disabilities etc.

To be considered for our school the child needs a EHCP (often called a statement) that is usually assessed by the LA. It is expensive and there is a high bar, not to mention the long waiting list.
It is rare to get an EHCP with just autism as the issue, although it is often the primary issue.

He's referring to Arday, not everyone who checks out.

I agree with him that what Arday did was immoral, though plenty have done what he did....and obviously he wasn't hitting people over the head, but he was taking opportunities that he didn't deserve and threatening people legally and with Police investigations who were looking into his lies.....However, 'push your luck' chancers are hardly new.

Cowardly? Well, he wasn't prepared to face up to the consequences of his lies and instead checked out. I wouldn't use the word coward myself but I know what he means.

As for men committing suicide? It is in our nature to do this more than women and some cultures more than others. Obviously while I hope anyone thinking about this seeks help it's also true that a man deciding how he goes out is a personal decision.

You described Arday's death as cowardly and immoral - the inference is clear as day... people who die in that way are cowardly and immoral.

Yes I did. Thanks for clearing up to everyone what I said. I did not say everyone who has committed suicide was immoral or cowardly. Nor do I think they all are. I hope that clears up your confusion.

So he's claiming one suicide was immoral and cowardly, but other suicides aren't... let's be serious.

You were smarter but I like the sound of him.

Hopefully he gets an opportunity.
