Positives from relegation

I have greater affection for players who seemed to have a genuine affinity for the club rather than some of the mercenaries who just see Palace as a means to an end.
I would take a Jim Cannon any day of the week over a Lacroix.
In time I'm sure I'll look back with a greater regard for Mitchell than Munoz.

Mitchell is by far my favourite player. For the reasons you state. Plus, look at his stats and injury record. Tuchel is some prick.

I am amazed at how many people think that the op was a “yearning” to be relegated. Or find this is a “disgraceful” thread. I did not say I wanted to be relegated, and I do not believe this is a disgraceful thread because I was pointing out some positives of not being in the premiership.
Certain posters need to calm down a bit. It’s all about opinions and mine currently is that I don’t believe it to be the end of the world if relegation finally caught up with us. I do not wish it but also don’t fear it. As I said football doesn’t start and end with the premier league.

Maybe my blasé attitude to relegation comes from finally seeing Palace win something, and never thinking that it would happen and also my jaded view of the premier league.
I have always thought that if given a choice of winning the cup but get relegated I would have taken that every time.

If anyone can put an argument across why the premier league is so great for a team like Palace in the current format, and why it is so important to stay up, I am more than happy to discuss, and may even change my mind.

Money is the main reason. Second is getting nearly all the matches on TV. Third is the European qualification possibility. The league is out of our reach.
 
having an improved stadium and getting a new generation of fans.........that is all progress. Before we got promoted there were a lot of kids in South London who wouldn't dream of supporting Palace.

As the OP intimates, we have been punching above our weight for ages. Our luck must run out eventually.

The problem I see with the money, is that it all goes to over paid players, ridiculous player valuations and agents. So little is left to improve the infrastructure. That is why clubs like Palace take decades to slowly improve, but the top clubs can throw billions at it without penalty. The more we have it seems the more it takes just to stand still.

I do agree that I would miss the amount of games Palace are on the TV.

Because of the size of our club, I think Europe is a poisoned chalice. Apart from the final, the campaign really was disappointing. However we got into Europe by winning the cup and not through the league. I’m not sure that we could get into the top 7 in the league to qualify. But I will concede, winning another trophy was great.

Fair enough Lanzo, I do recognise that Ultimately we are all supporters on here with different views. I'm just bewildered at how supporters can jump to judgements either good or bad after just two games and during an obvious transition for the club..

I do get the point of your post, we are all supporters. The first thing that comes to my mind when it comes to the Championship is that no one really wants to stay there. Yes there are some great games there but most teams struggle to just survive as football clubs. We nearly didn't have a club, trying to make ends meet.

I have been supporting Palace nearly as long as you and that won't change wherever we are but it has been so refreshing to have Premier League problems as opposed to Championship problems.

In any league, there is always the risk of relegation for anyone but the big six, the only positive for me is that, wherever we are, we have a club to support.
 
the yo yo clubs.......often promoted and often relegated........are the most fun to follow.

West Brom, Norwich, Leicester, Burnley etc......

its never Everton for them, never boring.

For Palace to be a yo yo club would be an amusing thing. Lets face it, we will never be part of the top 6 in the Prem. And it is nice to visit Millwall and Charlton for a laugh.

I think that all teams want to reach the promised land of the premier league because they believe the riches will make them bigger and better. I will not deny that this has been the case for Palace and we have seen incremental improvements over the past 14 years.

The big problem now is that despite the riches of the league, it is no longer enough. We spend around 60% of our turnover just on player salaries. This does not include the transfer fees, agents fees and all the other costs to running a football club.
The premier league has become financially unstable and even clubs like Newcastle and Villa are getting ransacked for their best players. The narrative is designed to keep the status quo and despite being portrayed as the best league in the world, it has become non competitive. Yes any team can win on any given day, and we will see the odd season where a Bournemouth will break into the top 6 but that is more down to the incompetence of the big boys. I don’t think we will ever see another Leicester size team win the league.

If you then throw in the big team bias, stroppy over egotistical players and plastic fans, it’s a wonder that any team wants to be in the premier league. A team needs to spend at least 100m a season just to stand still.

None of this means I want to be relegated, but there are many reasons I would likely be happier in the Championship.

In the PL, around 30% of teams who lost their first two games have been relegated. Of course, strength of opposition, manager situation, sale of established players are all big caveats in reaching a conclusion

The op could have been posted before a ball was even kicked. It could have even been posted if we had won both games. It is not about bed wetting, or being negative about our season ahead. What it is about, is the state of the premier league and why Championship football is more real than the league we find ourselves in.

most of my time following Palace has been us below the top league. It never really bothered me. Can i suggest that anybody who abandons Palace following a relegation, or othewise loses their sh1.t is a dreamer.

The sun will always rise over Selhurst, no matter what.
 
The title is the "Positives from Relegation", not corruption in the Prem or the good ole days of football. The title after all the other negative post on here today speaks to me of, oh well, if we go down, its not so bad...
