Positive about 26/27

To be fair to sage, although he doesn’t fill me full of confidence it’s been a mess of a pre season because we had so many players at the World Cup, so I think we’re guaranteed a poor start, but hopefully a decent CB or two coming in and our best players getting back on it, the poor start won’t drag on too long
We only need one as long as he's experienced and can fill that central CB role.

Possibly, but I’d like one to replace Riad and I’m not sure we can rely on Canvot for a full season
We already have more senior players than we can register for the season, and we need cover for each position, so we can't afford to have too many specialist players for one position. Sage has said he wants us to buy players that can cover more than one position, and with one more CB we'll have what we need, given that we already have the following who play or can play CB.
  • Richards
  • Riad
  • Canvot
  • Tomiyasu
  • Mingueza
  • Lerma

I do have doubts if we are after another CB. A lot of the links were early in the window before signing Tomiyasu.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that he came in, was deemed good enough which has freeded up funds to look for a CM.

Agree.

Dont know why we couldn't rely on him. He's a kid and has come in (with a few mistakes) and bullied established attackers.

Lad is going all the way to the top.
Good little player, but not going to be as good as some are making out imo, but he has improved and I hope I’m wrong

None of which are anywhere near the class of Guehi and LaCroix

The only reason I think we might still be looking for a CB is the possible lack of pace in the back 3 options. I've no idea whether Disasi or any other CBs we're being linked with have the necessary pace for that central CB role but what is clear is that Richards certainly hasn't. If we stick with what we have who's best suited for that central role?

Canvot will be an £80m rated player by the end of the season.

I do think he's going to be great but I don't think we can expect too much from him this year. On my view for him to continue his development this season he needs a strong leader and organiser next to him in order to keep the mistakes to a minimum. Losing Lacroix will hurt him badly if not adequately replaced IMO. Individually we've got some decent players along the backline but therein lies the problem, the back line must play as a unit. Individual skills will only get us so far.

Guehi and Lacroix were both great leaders and communicators. I'm not sure I see that in any of Riad, Richards, Tomiyasu or Canvot.

Richards would seem the most likely candidate. Maybe Mitchell could be encouraged to be more vocal now he can concentrate more on defending.

Were they?

Guehi was pretty quiet. Certainly could never hear him barking out orders.

Speaking to someone at the club last week they said Lacroix was actually pretty quiet around the training ground, and completely at odds to the post game fist pumping.

I do agree re pace.

Especially as it looks like we'll play a higher line this year, pace will be important. We know Lacroix was v fast. But if I'm honest I havent seen speeds of the other CBs so have no idea if they are slow. Or just not quite as fast.

re central role, no idea! as Tomiyasu can play RB I wondered about moving Chris to the middle and putting Tomiyasu as the right CB.

Canvot and Riad are quick enough but reading the game is where I think they will struggle. Richards doesn't have the pace of Lacroix nor Uncle Marc's positional sense. So I would put Chris in the middle of a three. We don't want him competing against pacy players in the channels.

Like you I would like to see an experienced operator brought in but they are few and far between. I think Disasi is in that mould to a degree but he doesn't strike me as a 'leader ' .

I think the centre backs we have are good enough generally speaking but the problem is the middle centre back playing three; Chelsea needed one to switch to that system which is why they bought Lacroix and it's that capability we need to replace. Simply being a world class centre back isn't enough; Guehi wasn't good at it. Richards might be able to learn it but he's not comfortable at the moment; I think he's only being put there as the most experienced of who we had pre-Tomiyasu and the same comment probably applies to his colleagues. If Disasi could be a good fit for it, why did Chelsea buy Lacroix? We could end up having to accept that trying to grow one is a weakness but probably not a disaster and hoping to identify a signing for January if it really won't work; an outside possibility could be Doucoure.
