Therefore, the thread excludes places like Pompeii & Stonehenge. Cos they are now mobbed by millions of tourists every year.
1. Chester......A Roman port city, for a while maybe even the most important port in the British isles.
2. Hattusa...........capital of the Hittite empire
3. Avignon............Papal headquarters in the 14th Century.
4. Ravenna............the Imperial Capital of Western Rome.......the city of Rome itself fell long before Rome fell.
5. Detroit......the Motor City. Formerly a boom-town. Now it makes Thornton Heath look posh.
